CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Look, we got a little spoiled. Let’s admit it. Major after major of elite-level champions claiming the game’s best titles, year after year. We began to expect it, that every single major would be the equivalent of the Super Bowl or the World Series, putting the very best at center stage.
Well, golf doesn’t always work that way.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Will Benson hit a three-run homer, Brady Singer earned his fifth win and the Cincinnati Reds hung on to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Friday night.
Austin Hays also homered for the Reds, who have won two in a row after dropping three straight.
Singer (5-2) allowed three runs and three hits in five innings, struck out four and walked one to win his second start in a row. Emilio Pagán, the Reds’ fourth reliever of the game, retired the Guardians in order in the ninth for his 10th save.
Bo Naylor and José Ramírez homered for the Guardians.
The NCAA and power conferences on Friday made what is likely their final pitch to U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken before she decides to grant or deny final approval of the 10-year settlement resolving the House, Carter and Hubbard antitrust litigations.
In a brief authored by attorneys Whitty Somvichian (Cooley) and Rakesh N. Kilaru (Wilkinson Stekloff) and their law firm colleagues, the NCAA and power conferences attempt to rebuke attorney objectors who contend the settlement ought to be rejected on account of its roster limit feature.
When the week began at the 2025 PGA Championship, there were 16 golfers with LIV Golf ties in the field at Quail Hollow Club. That number is being trimmed after Friday’s cut.
Bryson DeChambeau was one of the LIV Golf players who was a favorite coming into the week at Quail Hollow, and he remains in contention at the second men’s major championship of the year. However, some of his LIV companions, including other past major champions, are packing their bags and heading home after Friday’s second round.
The 2025 PGA Championship had 16 LIV Golf members tee it up at the Quail Hollow Club during the opening rounds. At the close of Friday’s action, eight of them will head into the weekend after the cut was set at 1 over.
A few notable names not making a run for the Wanamaker Trophy are past champions Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.
