Several Columbus Blue Jackets players along with general manager and president of hockey operations Don Waddell held an emotional press conference ahead of a candlelight vigil to remember Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.
The two brothers were killed last week after being hit by an alleged drunk driver while riding bikes in New Jersey on the evening before their sister’s wedding. The incident has shaken the hockey world.
“While there’s a huge hole in our lineup, there’s an even bigger one in our hearts,” Waddell said.

The final Grand Slam of the year is almost over, and we now have the semifinal matchups, featuring Aryna Sabalenka, Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula, and Karolina Muchova.
The semifinals for the 2024 US Open women’s singles bracket are now set. In one half of the bracket, the second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka will take on American Emma Navarro, the No. 13 seed. In the other half, the unseeded Karolina Muchova is the only remaining unseeded player, and she’ll have her hands full trying to best Jessica Pegula, the sixth-seeded American.

Add Whit Merrifield to the list of Major League Baseball players who think pitching across the sport has gotten out of control.
Merrifield was struck in the back of the head by a 95 mph pitch during Tuesday night’s Atlanta Braves win over the Colorado Rockies, leaving the game immediately afterward as a precaution. 
While he thankfully seemed to avoid significant injury, Merrifield spoke up after the game about what he believes is an epidemic in modern pitching. And the need to do something about it, in his view.

Knick-knack paddywhack, Ludacris is back. 
Rapper Ludacris made a big appearance on the mound Wednesday for the Atlanta Braves. Luda’ was brought out to throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Braves took on the Colorado Rockies. He made a strong callback to one of his earliest hits, “Get Back,” which featured one of the most memorable music videos of the 2000s. 
Fit with prosthetic Popeye-sized muscles, big white sneakers and a Braves jersey, Ludacris warned the Rockies to “get back” unless they’re asking for some hurt from Atlanta.

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was humbled Tuesday night after an ump chewed out the rookie sensation for prematurely walking off the mound.
Skenes had an exceptional outing, throwing five scoreless innings. The 22-year-old MLBer shared a scene with home plate umpire Doug Eddings in the first inning after Skenes’ 11th pitch was called ‘outside.’
“That’s outside,” the ump screeched, and Skenes in mid-stride as he walked off the mound, thinking it wrapped the 2-2 standoff with Seiya Suzuki.

The teenager who shot San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall, 23, has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and attempted robbery.
Pearsall was shot in the chest on Saturday during his day out at San Francisco’s touristy Union Square. The 17-year-old reportedly targeted Pearsall over his Rolex watch. He was seemingly unaware of Pearsall’s FNL status.
