ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico hired UC San Diego’s Eric Olen on Sunday as its next basketball coach.
Olen will replace Richard Pitino, who left to become Xavier’s coach on Tuesday.
“Eric is a proven winner with an incredible track record,” New Mexico athletic director Fernando Lovo said in a statement. “Beyond the accolades and success on the court, he is a values-driven leader who puts student-athletes first. We’re confident he’ll bring tremendous energy and vision to our program.
Manchester City star Erling Haaland had an up-and-down day, and it finished prematurely in an up-and-down way with an injury at the Vitality Stadium.
Haaland scored City’s second-half equalizer, but that came after the Norwegian had a penalty saved and missed two other chances to open the scoring for the Premier League champions.

He then suffered a painful looking injury when chasing a loose ball. Haaland beat Bournemouth’s James Cook to it but then felt the falling Cook’s weight crash down on the back of his heel.

NEW YORK (AP) — Brewers pitcher Nestor Cortes had a return to Yankee Stadium to forget on Saturday.
A day later, Cortes reflected on allowing five of the Yankees’ team-record nine homers and lasting two-plus innings in a 20-9 loss.
“It’s not a good feeling,” Cortes said. “So obviously didn’t go the way I planned.”
Cortes left the ballpark after the game without speaking to reporters in what the Brewers said was a miscommunication. He was at his locker about two hours before Sunday’s series finale.
NEW YORK (AP) — New torpedo bats drew attention when the New York Yankees hit a team-record nine homers that traveled a combined 3,695 feet on Saturday.
Using a strikingly different model in which wood is moved lower down the barrel after the label and shapes the end a little like a bowling pin, Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in New York’s 20-9 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers.
“That’s just trying to be the best we can be,” manager Aaron Boone said Sunday. “That’s one of the things that’s gotten pointed out.

Make no mistake, Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is a phenomenal hitter. But you would be forgiven for thinking differently based on his past few games.
To begin the season, the Red Sox traveled to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers in a four-game series. Through three games, the Rangers had won two, in large part because Devers was a non-factor for Boston.
Through three games, Devers has been to the plate 13 times, and is a crisp 0-12 with a walk – and an RBI (so I guess it’s not all bad). However, in the process, he has struck out an atrocious 10 times.
