KENT, Ohio — Kent State fired coach Kenni Burns on Friday following an investigation related to his two-year tenure.
Athletic director Randale Richmond said in a statement that offensive coordinator Mark Carney would serve as the interim coach for the upcoming season with a national search taking place at the end of the year.
“At this time, our focus will be to support our student-athletes and provide them with the best opportunity to have a positive and competitive experience,” Richmond added.
Kent State did not provide details on why Burns was fired.

A talented cornerback, born in Detroit, a Michigan alum, wears No. 2. Of course, Jourdan Lewis may come to mind first for Cowboys fans, but Will Johnson represents the next generation of possibilities at the position.
The junior, who just turned 22, is expected to hear his name called early in the NFL draft later this month. While it may seem like the focus of Notre Dame football’s recruiting effort are in the 2026 class, with two commitments in the last week (Ebenezer Ewetade and Rodney Dunham), the Irish coaching staff is still looking at classes beyond this current one.
On Thursday they offered 2027 North Carolina tight end Jaxon Dollar, a 6-foot, 5-inch and 208-pound prospect. He’s not currently ranked in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but he currently holds eight offers from teams like Florida State, Michigan, Penn State and others.
