The 2024 NBA Finals tip off on Thursday night, as the Boston Celtics look to add an 11th Larry O’Brien Trophy to their trophy case, while the Dallas Mavericks look to secure the franchise’s second-ever NBA title.
For viewing purposes, getting the opportunity to see a seven-game series between the Celtics and Mavericks would be wildly entertaining. It’s somewhat uncommon for an NBA Finals series to go the full seven games, however. Throughout history, the NBA Finals has gone the full distance of seven games only 19 times.

The narratives entering Game 1 of the NBA Finals surrounded the Boston Celtics‘ lack of quality opponents faced in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Many of those statements were true. The Celtics ran through injury-plagued versions of the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers en route to their second NBA Finals appearance in three years.
But in the first half of Game 1 on Thursday night against the Dallas Mavericks, the Celtics reminded NBA fans that they were a league-best 64-18 in the regular season, and that they were rightfully the Finals favorites.

NBA fans were blind-sided by news on Thursday when UConn’s Dan Hurley was named the top candidate of interest for the Los Angeles Lakers.
After two seasons, LA dumped their former coach, Darvin Ham, and the ensuing head-coaching hiring buzz shifted heavily toward J.J. Redick, a former player turned podcaster without a coaching background.
Then Hurley’s name popped up and rose to the top, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Hurley is now expected to meet with the team on Friday.
So things are getting serious.
A scary scene occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ OTAs on Thursday after a player suffered a seizure that led to cardiac arrest during a team meeting.
Second-year defensive lineman B.J. Thompson suffered a medical emergency on Thursday, prompting the Chiefs to cancel all team activities for the day. CBS Sports shared on Thursday that the team will reconvene on Friday for a meeting.
Thompson suffered the seizure during a special teams meeting and was rushed to the hospital. The 25-year-old is reportedly in stable condition. He was a fifth-round pick in 2023 out of Stephen F.
