The abrupt news that ESPN has cut ties with NFL analyst Ryan Clark was a surprise. The details are surreal.
Via Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Clark was informed of the move during Monday’s NFL Live. A show on which he was appearing.
Per the report, ESPN told Clark during the show because ESPN was receiving media inquiries and the company feared the news would leak before ESPN could tell him. Some would say that’s still better than telling someone they were being let go, you know, while they were on the air.
ESPN had planned, per Marchand, to tell Clark on Tuesday morning.

ESPN has reportedly fired Ryan Clark as part of a round of layoffs, per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand. Clark, a Pro Bowl and Super Bowl-winning safety, joined ESPN as an NFL analyst in 2015.
Clark, who was on “NFL Live” on Monday, was informed about the layoff in the middle of taping, and did not finish the show, per Marchand. Initially, ESPN reportedly planned to tell Clark that he was let go on Tuesday morning, in line with other layoffs, but media inquiries had led the network to fear that Clark would find out he was fired online before they had a chance to tell him.

HOUSTON (AP) — Miami Marlins All-Star right-hander Max Meyer was placed on the 15-day injured list with a neck strain, and All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez is out of the starting lineup for the second straight game.
Marlins’ manager Clayton McCullough said before Monday’s game against Miami that Meyer felt “a little sensation in the neck area” during his start in Seattle on July 7. He felt fine going into his start on Saturday in Milwaukee, but the sensation returned during the third inning.
The Marlins say Meyer will be examined by Dr. Robert Watkins IV in Los Angeles this week.
