After watching as a tourist in 2022, Marketa Vondrousova is now a Wimbledon Champion
A lot of history has been made at Wimbledon in recent days.
Now Marketa Vondrousova has etched her own name in the annals of tennis.
History was made on the Mens’ side on Friday, as Novak Djokovic advanced to his 35th Grand Slam Final, setting a new mark for the sport. He will square off with Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, as Alcaraz became the youngest Wimbledon Mens’ finalist since Rafael Nadal in 2006.
Vondrousova became the lowest-ranked woman to win Wimbledon, defeating Jabeur 6-4, 6-4.
Here is a sentence one didn’t envision writing a day ago, much less at the start of the tournament: Markéta Vondroušová is your 2023 Wimbledon women’s singles champion.
The 24-year-old Czech was not seeded at the start of the event, in fact coming into this season her record on grass was 2–10. Never mind, she played the tournament of her life, winning by far the biggest title of her career. In today’s final she beat a nervous Ons Jabeur of Tunisia—more on that later—in straight sets, 6–4, 6–4.
Apart from a select few high draft picks, most participants in the NBA Summer League are simply trying to survive. They will not, in all likelihood, become All-Stars, but they may come to provide valuable roster depth in the G League or overseas.
With this in mind, Mavericks forward Marcus Bingham Jr. appeared to make a career-halting mistake Friday evening by scoring on the wrong basket. However, he was vindicated after the fact.
The Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Mixon have come to an agreement that will see the star running back continue wearing the black and orange uniform for at least one more season.
To show just how much Mixon wanted to stay with the team that he has called home for what will be his 7th NFL season, he actually took a pay cut with the organization. Mixon is now set to make $6 million, rather than his original $9.4 million base salary – a pretty significant $3.4 million decrease.
Unseeded Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic made history on Saturday in the women’s Wimbledon final, winning her first grand slam title in historic fashion, 6–4, 6–4 over 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur.
With the victory, Vondrousova became the lowest-ranked winner and first-ever unseeded woman to capture the Wimbledon title. The 24-year-old, who is No. 42 in the world, was the first unseeded woman to reach the final at Wimbledon in 60 years, according to The Associated Press.
Vondroušová has been awaiting another opportunity to win a grand slam.
The NBA is waiting on a Damian Lillard trade, but according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, there’s reason to believe a deal might take weeks—if not months—to materialize.
At long last, Lillard is ready to move on from the Trail Blazers, the only team he’s played for during his NBA career, after the club’s recent struggles. Lillard has also made it clear that he wants to play for the Heat, fresh off of their run to the NBA Finals, and Miami appears to be the only strong bidder for the seven-time All-Star.
