With Monday’s deadline having passed, what is next for Saquon Barkley and the Giants?
There is an old adage that holds “deadlines make deals.”
Unfortunately for Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants, that adage failed to come true on Monday. Now, the organization is facing the prospect of opening the 2023 season without their star running back in the backfield.
Under the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement the deadline for teams to reach contract extensions with players under the franchise tag expired at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on Monday afternoon.

Brittany Mahomes she says she was not ready for the scrutiny that comes along with being married to an NFL superstar.
In a joint interview with CBS Mornings Monday, Patrick and Brittany discussed their relationship and their family’s rapid rise to fame.
“I was not prepared for this,” Brittany said. “And at such a young age. We were in love, and I loved him with all of my heart.
“But, you know, I didn’t expect it to skyrocket this soon, and us kind of just being thrown into the fire like this.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had a season to forget in 2022, missing time due to a thumb injury and struggling with accuracy on the field.
After throwing 15 interceptions last year, tied with the Texans’ Davis Mills for the league high despite appearing in just 12 games, Dallas’s starting signal caller boldly guaranteed he’d throw fewer than 10 picks in 2023, though not everyone seems to be buying what he’s selling.
“I won’t have 10 interceptions this year,” said Prescott.

Sha’Carri Richardson remains undefeated in the 100-meter this season after another impressive performance on Saturday. As focus shifts toward the World Championships, her intentions are two-fold.
Richardson wants to win. Obviously. Perhaps (probably not?) more importantly, she wants to change the way in which athletes are represented.

EA released its wide receiver and defensive back ratings for Madden 24 on Monday, and one player joined an exclusive club with a 99 rating. Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson became the latest star to get the highest rating in the game, and he’s the only player at his position to get the coveted rating in this year’s edition.
While some players may not care about their rating, Jefferson made it clear that this means a lot for him. The fourth-year pro explained that he has been playing Madden his entire life.
The night before AEW comes to Boston for the “Blood & Guts” edition of Dynamite, wrestling icon Matt Hardy will set the stage with an evening full of memories.
Hosting a live, in-person episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast Tuesday just north of Boston at the famed Kowloon restaurant, Hardy will rewatch the ladder match from WWE’s No Mercy pay-per-view in 1999 that turned Edge, Christian, and Matt and his brother Jeff Hardy into bona fide superstars.
There’s no set rule, no specific level of fantasy failure that must be attained in order to call a player a bust. A bust is a bust is a bust. You know it when you see it.
For the most part, it’s about expectations. More to the point, it’s about failing to live up to lofty expectations. Or maybe the expectations are average but the player is just so ridiculously bad that he’s got to be considered a bust.
2023 Fantasy Football Draft Kit
The bottom line: If you draft a player that merits bust consideration, it can destroy your fantasy season.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey paid tribute to the late, great Mike Leach on Monday at the start of the 2023 SEC media days event.
In a small but heartwarming gesture, Sankey took to the podium sans a necktie, paying homage to the legendary college football coach who died in December 2022 due to complications from a heart condition.
The tribute stems from a conversation Sankey and Leach had at the 2022 SEC media days, during which the former Mississippi State head coach iterated that he’s not a fan of neckties, preferring not to wear them at all.
The Cincinnati Reds are suddenly struggling. Following a 22-game stretch in which the team homered in every game — breaking a franchise record — and went 17-5, they’ve lost four straight. More important, the offense has disappeared. So, they’ve called up Christian Encarnacion-Strand to the big leagues.
During the first three games of the Reds’ losing streak, they scored 0 runs.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced Monday that he suffered a broken back after a tree limb fell on him at his Kansas City home.
“During cleanup after a big storm in KC, a large tree limb decided to fall and crush me,” Passan wrote on Twitter. “The good news: I still have use of my arms, legs and Twitter fingers. The bad news: I have a broken back.
“The vertebra fracture will heal,” he continued. “I will be better. I’m hoping the pain subsides between now and the trade deadline, through painkiller-fueled tweets could be a fun time.”
