It’s funny to say now, but Davey Martinez realized this year’s Nationals were ready to win when he watched last year’s Nationals lose. It wasn’t the defeats themselves, 107 of them in all, but the way the young players responded.
They moped. They sat in silence and hung their heads. They looked miserable.
Part of the manager wanted to cheer them up, to remind them that this was all part of the process. But part of him rejoiced. “It’s a good sign,” he says.
So this spring, he addressed the team. “Hold onto that feeling,” he told them.

Sure, starters rarely see a lot of action and there’s very little stock put into the preseason in general, but no team looked better than Pittsburgh during the league’s dress rehearsal.
Here’s hoping Professor Taylor is a lenient instructor—at least for the sake of Duke quarterback Riley Leonard.
The Blue Devils pulled off a stunning 28-7 victory over No. 9-ranked Clemson on Monday night, fueled by the stellar play of their signal-caller.
After arguably the biggest football upset in school history, a night in which Leonard threw for 175 yards, rushed for 98 more and had an impressive 44-yard touchdown run, the quarterback’s thoughts turned to coursework.
Expectations for Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders were fairly high after his impressive run playing for his father Deion at Jackson State. Of course, as with any high-profile transfer up from the FCS to FBS Power 5 level, questions remained about how he would handle a higher level of competition.
Based on one game against last year’s College Football Playoff runner-up, Sanders has provided some strong answers.
Sanders broke the Buffaloes single-game passing yard record in his debut, throwing for 510 yards and four touchdowns in the 45–42 win.
Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Fritz hope to end an American men’s Grand Slam drought
American men’s tennis is having a bit of a moment.
While the American women have shined on the main stage for years, the last Grand Slam winner from the United States on the men’s side came back in 2003. That year, Andre Agassi won the Australian Open to start the season, while Andy Roddick secured the U.S. Open to close out the year.
Could that drought end in a few days?
For the first time since 2005 three American men are through to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.
Aaron Hicks considers himself to be one of the lucky ones. Released by the New York Yankees on May 26, the outfielder was signed four days later by the Baltimore Orioles. That’s a difference right now of 18 games in the American League East standings.

The Broncos traded a lot of capital and gave Russ a lot of money, for year one to be horrendous. What can Sean Payton do to revive Russ’ career?
To say that this is a critical year for Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos is an understatement. After trading a massive haul to the Seattle Seahawks for Wilson, the Broncos signed him to a $242 million contract extension with $48 million in average salary over five years, fourth highest among NFL QBs.

We love football, even when it doesn’t love us back.
You can’t make people get it. There’s no intelligible way to explain to someone the unique, inescapable allure of the National Football League: Its incongruous ballet of athletic beauty and brutal violence, wrapped in a corporate bow. No matter how frustrating it gets, regardless of how often the NFL manages to sink lower, even as billionaire owners fleece local politicians and take local taxes to increase their wealth — every September we’re back for more.
The fantasy football season kicks off this Thursday night as the Chiefs host the Lions in what the oddsmakers at SI Sportsbook lists as the highest game total of the week.
Friendly Fantasy Football reminder: Don’t forget to set your lineups, and don’t ever start your Thursday players in a flex spot.
But I digress.
This article is for those who drafted some of your teams in July or early August (read: ME). A lot has changed over the last few weeks, and there’s probably room for some adjustment.
