If the plan doesn’t work… ditch it.
That’s what perennial NBA All-Star James Harden is thinking after reports Thursday confirmed that Harden and his current team, the Philadelphia 76ers, will begin exploring trade options for the veteran guard.
To still secure the bag, Harden opted into his salary option with the Sixers for next season.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, “James Harden is opting into his $35.6 million deal for next season — in order for the 10-time All-Star and the 76ers to work together on a trade out of Philadelphia.

With the start of NBA free agency just one day away, the basketball world was hit was a stunning bit of news when it was reported that James Harden would opt in to the final year of his contract with the 76ers, with the ultimate goal of being traded away to another team.
If a Harden trade does indeed happen, it would be the former MVP’s fourth team in the past two-and-a-half years. Harden was traded from the Rockets to the Nets in January 2021, then was shipped to Philadelphia just over a year later. He’s made 79 starts each for the Nets and Sixers. James Harden reportedly plans to opt into his $35.6 million player option for the 2023–24 NBA season, allowing him to work together with the 76ers on a trade away from the franchise, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The Clippers and the Knicks are among the teams expected to engage in potential trade discussions for Harden, according Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix and ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. 
Prior to Thursday’s news, Philadelphia had been motivated throughout the offseason to bring the 10-time All-Star back to the City of Brotherly Love.
