The Mercury and Brittney Griner returned to the star’s home state of Texas Wednesday, as Phoenix fell 84–79 to the Wings at the College Park Center in Arlington.
In attendance for Griner’s return to Texas? Baylor women’s basketball coach Nicki Collen and her team.
In an interview at the arena, Collen—who took over at Baylor in 2021, eight years after the end of Griner’s college career—said that she plans to have Baylor retire Griner’s jersey when the school opens its new basketball arena next year.
“That’s the goal,” Collen said, via ESPN.

With wildfires continuing to rage in Canada, and the smoke billowing down into the United States, Formula 1 officials are seeking to ease fears regarding next week’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Smoky conditions and deteriorating air quality led to the cancellation of numerous sporting events along the East Coast in recent days, with Major League Baseball cancelling games in New York City and Philadelphia.
The Vikings and running back Dalvin Cook are parting ways after six seasons, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The long-rumored split will have big time implications for fantasy managers, starting out with an increase in the value of Alexander Mattison. A talented runner who rarely had a chance to be a featured back, he’ll now be a solid No. 2 fantasy option and worth a top-50 pick in redrafts.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, one of the most prominent and influential executives in college athletics, informed his staff Thursday morning that he will step down in 2024. His successor has already been chosen: Pete Bevacqua, chairman of NBC Sports Group and a second-generation Notre Dame alum.
