No. 8 USC escaped with a narrow 48–41 win in Boulder on Saturday afternoon against Colorado, but nearly blew a four touchdown lead, thanks in large part to another questionable defensive performance.
USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has been at the center of questions surrounding the ceiling of Lincoln Riley-coached teams, as his defenses have never quite held up their side of the bargain dating back to Riley’s teams at Oklahoma.
Saturday was yet another data point of Grinch’s defense potentially holding Riley and the Trojans back.

Two of the best quarterbacks in the nation faced off on Saturday in Boulder, as No. 8 USC downed Colorado 48–41 on the road in a high-scoring affair that turned from blowout-to-interesting down the stretch.
At the center of the offensive explosion on Saturday were the two quarterbacks. USC signal-caller and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams went 30-for-40 passing for 403 yards and six touchdowns to one interception.

Colorado tried so, so hard to turn what looked like a blowout loss in the making into a compelling contest.
However, the Buffaloes fell just short in their bid to upset No. 8 USC. Down 48–21 with 2:14 left in the third quarter, Colorado scored the game’s last 20 points — just enough to make Trojans fans sweat.
One of the key culprits in the Buffaloes’ comeback stalling out was shoddy clock management on their final scoring drive. It took 4:15 for Colorado to travel 78 yards to wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr.’s 16-yard catch with just 1:43 showing on the game clock.

Some business decisions were made …
We have argued here at SB Nation that playing quarterback is the toughest job in sports.
But we also need to acknowledge that there are some other difficult jobs in football. Among them? Holding for extra points and field goals. You need to catch the snap, get the ball down, spin the laces — thanks a lot Ace Ventura for making that a bit of household knowledge — and make sure the ball is put down just the way the kicker wants it.
And when things go wrong, everyone is going to know your name.

After the play was ruled dead, the TV broadcast showed Randle shoving Miners offensive lineman Steven Hubbard into the ground away from the action. Randle then proceeded to get up and stomp on his helmet.

Yea, a pretty hefty suspension should be coming for La Tech’s Brevin Randle pic.twitter.

There have been some incredible catches so far this college football season, and Michigan’s Roman Wilson dropped another potential Catch of the Year nominee.
The Michigan Wolverines were on the road this week to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and it didn’t take long for Wilson to steal the show with an incredible grab.
Wolverines QB JJ McCarthy dropped back and waited for someone to get open. He had plenty of time and eventually decided to air one out to Wilson in the endzone.

Colorado did its best to stage a late-game comeback against No. 8 USC on Saturday, a game that was not all that competitive until the 4th quarter.
The visiting Trojans built a huge lead behind the stellar performance of its reigning Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, but suspect tackling on the defensive side saw USC nearly blow what was once a 34–7 lead. Ultimately Colorado’s comeback bid came short after USC recovered an onside kick with 1:43 to play to hold on and win 48–41.

BOULDER, CO- The Colorado Buffaloes might’ve been the coolest thing in college football for the opening month of the season, but the hype around Colorado itself needs a break. Now, that doesn’t mean that Deion Sanders or his crew will tamper things down, but it does mean that we need to focus elsewhere for a bit.
No, I’m not saying move on from Colorado, but we have to call them what they are, a middle of the pack football team. It doesn’t matter what Deion Sanders says during the week leading up to the game, or what is said postgame, the Buffs aren’t ready for the big moment yet.
