Who knew the 2023 season would already produce an overwhelming favorite for Catch of the Year on Opening Day. Thanks to an unbelievable catch by Angels right fielder Hunter Renfroe during Thursday’s home game against the Athletics, that’s exactly what we got.
Renfroe, who was traded to L.A. in November, made a big impression in his first game with his new team courtesy of a stellar defensive play in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Giants infielder J.D. Davis stepped into the batter’s box in the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium Thursday and suddenly transported us all the way back to the Dark Ages of baseball, which is to say seven months ago.
The first thing Davis did after stepping in was to step out with his left foot. Then he cradled his bat under his left arm, unhinged the Velcro strap on his left batting glove and refastened it. Remember, Davis had yet to take a swing. Then with his right hand he grabbed some pine tar off the midpoint of his bat.

Colorado Rockies pitcher Daniel Bard missed the team’s season debut on Thursday after getting moved to the IL. Bard’s starting on the 15-day injured list as a result of anxiety that the pitcher is experiencing following his performance at the World Baseball Classic for Team USA.
Bard, 37, walked away from the game in 2013 during a rough stretch of pitching, having played five seasons for the Red Sox. He was the named NL Comeback Player of the Year in 2020 after returning to the majors with the Colorado Rockies.

Husky Nation can breathe a huge sigh of relief: Jonathan XIV is on his way to Houston!
More important than coach Dan Hurley’s lucky adult underoos, the UConn men’s basketball team will have its mascot, Jonathan the Husky, in attendance for Saturday’s Final Four matchup.
There had been some previous fears among Husky Nation that Jonathan XIV would be cheering on the team from home when No. 4 UConn tips off against No. 5 Miami.
On Thursday night, all those fears were put to rest when the pup took to social media to let the Connecticut faithful know he is now en route.

Houston native Megan Thee Stallion had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Astros Opening Day game vs. the White Sox on Thursday, and fans loved it.
It was a big night at Minute Maid Park as Houston played its first game since winning the 2022 World Series. The festivities included the raising of the banner ahead of the game.
This World Series ceremony was followed by the three-time Grammy award winner approaching the mound to toss out the first pitch, sporting a personalized Astros jersey.
