The Aztecs are moving on to the Elite Eight after a stunning victory over the Crimson Tide.
The No. 1 overall seed in the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament has fallen, as Alabama shockingly lost in the Sweet 16 on Friday to No. 5-seed San Diego State, 71–64.
The Aztecs, led by coach Brian Dutcher in his sixth season, turned in a physical performance to eliminate the Crimson Tide, and become the first Mountain West team in history to advance to the Elite Eight. Prior to Friday, the Mountain West had gone 0–6 in the Sweet 16.

This was a terrible call.
You would think if someone landed on you in a basketball game and smooshed your face into the court that the refs wouldn’t punish you for having your face smooshed into the court, right?
Well, apparently you’d be wrong because that’s exactly what happened to San Diego State’s Matt Bradley during Friday night’s Sweet 16 battle with Alabama.
Bradley was diving for a loose ball when he was called for the most painful, and mind-boggling, foul of the men’s NCAA tournament.
Rick Barnes may have seen the future of Tennessee basketball Thursday night in Madison Square Garden in New York.
And it ain’t him.
After watching young Florida Atlantic coach Dusty May, 46, dismantle the larger, beefier, more highly recruited, more expensive (via NIL) Tennessee players with a significantly less talented and cheaper roster, Tennessee fans have to wonder what it would be like to have May coaching their team.

Alabama and San Diego State are currently battling for a spot in the Elite Eight. Every play in this Sweet 16 matchup is an important one and tensions are understandably high.
All of that makes what we saw happen on one play in the first half very easy to laugh at, because we’ve never seen something this before.
In case you missed it, Alabama guard Jahvon Quinerly was called for an excessive flagrant 1 foul after he appeared to pick up SDSU’s Nathan Mensah and put him on his back for a few seconds.
The former NBA big man didn’t mince words regarding Chalmers’s dissing of his former teammate.
Not that the NBA’s all-time leading scorer needs it, but a former teammate came to his defense in an epic rant.
Following recent comments made by Mario Chalmers that “NBA players have never feared Lebron James like they did Michael Jordan”, former Cavalier Tristian Thompson put Chalmers on blast.
The 11-year NBA veteran was set off by the comments, ripping the former Heat point guard in an explosive tirade on The Draymond Green Show.
