The Lakers claimed the seventh spot in the Western Conference playoffs with a grueling overtime victory over the short-handed Timberwolves in the NBA’s play-in tournament Tuesday night.
Trae Young had 25 points to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 116-105 road victory over the Miami Heat in a play-in game Tuesday night to lock up the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Jimmy Butler said he is confident the Heat can turn things around in Friday’s must-win play-in game, but he was critical of the team’s effort, saying it needs to play “the exact opposite that we played tonight” to win.
Longtime captain Patrice Bergeron and the Boston Bruins defeated the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, and the Bruins are now the most successful regular-season team in NHL history, owning both the single-season wins and points records.
Ryan Mountcastle homered twice and tied a team record with nine RBIs, helping the Baltimore Orioles rally from a four-run deficit to a 12-8 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
The Lakers survived the NBA play-in tournament, outlasting the Timberwolves, 108–102 in overtime Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
But the victory came with more anxiety than necessary for the hosts.
After trailing by as 15 points in the third quarter, the Lakers chipped away at Minnesota’s lead and finally tied the game with about two minutes left. When Dennis Schröder buried a three-pointer from the left corner with 1.4 seconds left in regulation to give Los Angeles a 98–95 lead, the game appeared to be all but over.
Lakers fans complained about officiating against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Forget that
With the Lakers trailing by seven, 68-61, halfway through the third quarter, Lakers fans broke out in possibly the loudest REFS YOU SUCK chant of the year.

Listening to a fanbase whose team has received a laundry list of calls made in their favor cry about officiating was amusing.
The Lakers earned a thrilling, come-from-behind 108–102 overtime win over the Timberwolves in Tuesday night’s Western Conference play-in game. The victory helped the iconic franchise make history after earning the No. 7 seed in the West, marking the first time in NBA history that all four teams from the state of California qualified for the playoffs in the same season.
Since the Kings moved to Sacramento in 1985, there has never been a postseason that featured all four California teams.
Los Angeles rallied from 15 down, then survived a bad foul by Anthony Davis that helped Minnesota force overtime. The reward? A playoff matchup with Memphis.
