To say things have unraveled quickly for the Yankees is an understatement.
As recently as Aug. 11, New York was 60–56 and within shouting distance of the third wild card spot, then occupied by the Blue Jays. Now, nine losses later, the Yankees are 60–65, 17 games out of first place in the AL East, and 10 games behind the third-place Mariners in the wild card race.
With New York as rudderless as it’s been at any point in the last three decades, general manager Brian Cashman didn’t mince words when talking to reporters Wednesday afternoon.

McIlroy acknowledged his pet peeve on the course, involving fans being too vocal ahead of the Tour Championship.
Rory McIlroy has never been one to shy away from sharing his feelings. That was once again evident Wednesday on the eve of the Tour Championship in Atlanta, GA.
After being asked his thoughts on the emergence of live sports betting and its impact on golf, McIlroy was blunt with his response.
Expectations were high for wide receiver Corey Davis out of college. He was selected fifth overall in the 2017 draft by the Tennessee Titans.
Six rough seasons in the NFL later, Davis is calling it a career at the young age of 28.

The Angels are floundering, and now they might be without their two-way star for a while
Shohei Ohtani had one heck of a first inning on Wednesday against Cincinnati Reds.
But it may have come at a cost for the Los Angeles Angels.
Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani left Wednesday’s game early with what the team is calling arm fatigue.
The Angels were hosting the Cincinnati Reds in what was Ohtani’s first start in about two weeks. After a meeting on the mound he suddenly exited the game in just the second inning.

Just before Ohtani walked off the mound, the Angels broadcast team was discussing how his velocity was noticeably down.
At the time of the trade, the 49ers’ decision to move up nine spots in the 2021 NFL draft to select North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance was viewed by many throughout the game as bold, if not puzzling. Just over two years later, the move is looking increasingly like a disaster.
San Francisco’s reported decision to name Sam Darnold its backup quarterback drew plenty of reactions from across the football world, most of them critical of how the team’s gamble on Lance has failed to pay off.

Summer in Indiana usually means sycamore trees, auto racing and John Mellencamp on the radio.
This summer in the Hoosier State, however, has been all about two newsmakers: Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and team owner Jim Irsay.
Taylor’s desire to be paid in accordance with his status as one of the best running backs in the NFL has rankled Irsay and led to a protracted holdout. The messy saga has included public squabbling between Irsay and Taylor’s agent, mysterious reports of back pain disputed by Taylor, and a trade request.
Teams better hurry up if they want to trade for Jonathan Taylor.
Making his first pitching start in two weeks, Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani was removed from the mound in the top of the second inning after throwing just 26 pitches. He had shown diminished velocity through the first five batters he faced, and left after a discussion with the team trainer.
Ohtani was replaced on the mound by Tyler Anderson. No reason for his removal was announced by the team.
Ohtani had his previous start skipped, with the team citing arm fatigue.
