Everything old is new again for the Astros.
Less than eight months after pitcher Justin Verlander left Houston for the Mets in free agency, New York is reportedly dealing the future Hall of Famer back to Space City. The move gives the Astros—just a half-game back of the Rangers in the AL West standings—another ace as they pursue a second straight World Series title.
More importantly, though, it gave Twitter the opportunity to make its favorite joke whenever an athlete lands with a team for which they’ve already played.

Pitcher Justin Verlander made huge MLB news on Tuesday when it was announced the Mets ace would be traded back to the Astros after only half a season in New York, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
While the news of Verlander being traded didn’t come as a huge shock to MLB fans since the pitcher said he was thinking about his future with the team after the Mets traded away Max Scherzer on Saturday, fans didn’t necessarily expect Verlander to head back to Houston that quickly.
Verlander spent four and a half seasons with the Astros, through 2022.

Playing on the road at Kansas and Iowa State will be just as hard as playing on the road at Alabama, says former Crimson Tide assistant Jeff Banks.
Banks, who is now on Steve Sarkisian’s Texas staff as special teams coordinator after spending 2018 to ’20 coaching under Alabama’s Nick Saban, was asked about the road game this season against their future SEC foe.
“We’re just going to play another road game,” Banks said, per Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com. “Just as hard in Kansas and Iowa State as it is going to be in Tuscaloosa. It’s just bigger and more people.

Nathaniel Hackett addressed criticism from Sean Payton for the first time on Tuesday where he said “there’s a code, there’s a way things are done” when referring to coaching. He said the whole situation was “unfortunate” and “it sucks” but was happy the comments didn’t come during the season when the two teams are set to face off in Week 5.
“I’m almost thankful we got that out of the way. We all understand the way certain people feel and think,” Hackett told reporters.

After some lengthy negotiations, the Mets and Astros were reportedly able to come to terms on an agreement over a Justin Verlander trade, according to multiple reports. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale was the first to report the news.
Passan reported Tuesday, just a few hours before MLB’s trade deadline officially passed, that the two sides “have a deal in place,” which will see the 40-year-old return to Houston.
Verlander, who won the American League Cy Young award in 2022, has registered a 3.15 ERA across 16 starts in a Mets uniform, striking out 81 batters across 94.

At the tail end of Patriots practice Tuesday, a player exited the field carrying his shoulder pads and helmet in one hand and a small thank-you note written on white Patriots stationery in the other. He handed the note to a woman who was working security outside the friends and family tent here at Patriots training camp, on the fields right outside Gillette Stadium, and thanked her for all she was doing.
Clearly a bit emotional, she tucked the note inside her pocket and resumed her duties, which included making sure no one was filming practice during nondesignated periods.
