BOSTON – Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize didn’t allow any runs.
Neither did Boston Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suárez.
Pitching dominance set the tone for both sides, but the Tigers fell short in a 1-0 loss to the Red Sox on Friday, April 17, in the first of four games in the series at Fenway Park, ending a six-game winning streak.
The teams needed extra innings to settle the scoreless tie.
In the 10th inning, the Tigers came up empty against right-handed reliever Garrett Whitlock, only for the Red Sox to come through against right-handed reliever Will Vest.

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole officially began his rehab assignment Friday, making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in early 2025.
Suiting up for the Somerset Patriots, the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate, Cole threw 4 1/3 innings with 3 hits allowed, 3 earned runs, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts on 44 pitches. While pitch-by-pitch data isn’t available online, he reportedly hit 96 mph in the first inning.
He was also throwing quite a curveball.

The Dallas Stars made a big roster announcement on Friday, one day before the start of Round 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
Stars general manager Jim Nill confirmed the two-year contract extension of defenseman Nils Lundkvist. This new contract will take effect starting with the 2026-27 season and will end at the conclusion of the 2027-28 campaign.
Lundkvist’s, 25, new contract has a total value of $3.

It has not been the kind of season that the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team was hoping for so far. They have lost four straight series in conference play, and have dropped to 25-10 on the year, and out of the top 25. That makes their series against Vanderbilt a big one.
Game one was on Friday, and it was a thrilling one for Wildcats fan. The Commodores jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Kentucky cut it in half in the sixth inning. That set up the fireworks in the ninth. The Cats opened up with three straight hits to load the bases.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Oneil Cruz hit a two-run home run, Brandon Lowe went 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Tampa Bay 5-1 on Friday night to snap the Ray’s six-game win streak.
Bubba Chandler (1-1) allowed a run and three hits over six innings. Mason Montgomery, Gregory Soto and Dennis Santana each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Marcell Ozuna and Spencer Horwitz each had three hits.
Ozuna led off the second inning with a single and opened the scoring when Horwitz doubled.
