Coming out of the All-Star Break in 2025, the Seattle Mariners had some juice. They’d faltered from their scalding April-May surge, ceding the division lead to the Houston Astros at the start of June with a brutal 4-13 stretch from May 24-June 11th featuring multiple losses to Houston and dismal sweeps.

But commissioner Cathy Engelbert is already eying a bigger and more international future for the league.
“The past 30 years have been about building the foundation,” she said at a news conference before the 2026 WNBA Draft. “The next 30 are about scaling the game.”
Engelbert said she wants to bring the WNBA outside of North America.
