Is the SEC too poor to compete with the financial backers of the Big Ten?
We’re living in an unprecedented era of college sports where the people with the deepest pockets can shift entire tides with the stroke of a pen.
Some people love it. Others hate it. Either way, it’s reality and we all need to accept it. That reality led to Nick Saban making a very fascinating admission.
Pat McAfee spoke with Saban Friday about the insane money coming out of Big Ten universities, and the former Alabama coach admitted the SEC simply doesn’t have that kind of financial success.
The defending national champs in women’s volleyball lost not once, but twice within the past week. The State Farm Women’s College Volleyball Showcase in Pittsburgh was not kind to Penn State as it fell 3-1 to Arizona State and then 3-2 to TCU, results that shake up the hierarchy in the sport.
Against Arizona State, the Nittany Lions simply couldn’t stop junior opposite Noemie Glover, who registered a double-double with 22 kills and 10 blocks, both career highs. The Sun Devils stumbled in their second match at the showcase though, suffering a sweep at the hands of Pitt.

Barring an unexpected change in the coming days, there won’t be a single injury concern for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. They’re going to be at full strength against the Houston Texans, having “all hands on deck” for the season opener, Sean McVay said Friday.
That includes Ahkello Witherspoon, who was listed as a non-participant in practice on Thursday due to a knee injury. McVay told reporters that Witherspoon is expected to play against Houston and the team was simply being cautious with him before the game.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a huge matchup this Saturday night against the Michigan Wolverines. It’s a top 25 showdown between two of the winningest programs in college football history. It’s a game that will feature two teams with strong defenses and exciting quarterbacks, though with varying experience.
Michigan features a defense that’s led by former NFL defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Martindale ran defenses with the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and New York Giants.
Just in time for their big showdown against the New York Mets, the Cincinnati Reds activated starting catcher Tyler Stephenson from the injured list and slotted him in the seventh spot of the starting lineup for the series opener.
Stephenson has missed the past three weeks because of a fracture at the tip of his left thumb and will catch with a custom-made protective sleeve over the thumb, under his glove.
