IOWA CITY, Iowa — At the end of the third quarter, during the confused minutes between Fernando Mendoza absorbing a hard hit into the Indiana football bench and Saturday’s officiating crew deciding the resulting scrum merited no further action, Pat Coogan gathered his team together.
His message, he told reporters afterward, was impassioned, but measured. His message intentionally no more inflammatory than what he might deliver pregame.
“It was my job and my responsibility as a leader of this team to just rally the troops, and get everyone refocused,” Coogan said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Hany Mukhtar scored early in the first half, Sam Surridge scored early in the second and Nashville SC clinched a postseason berths before finishing off a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.
Nashville (16-11-5) earned a spot in the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons when New York City FC beat the New York Red Bulls 3-2 before Nashville’s match concluded.
Mukhtar scored unassisted in the 2nd minute to give Nashville the lead. It was the 16th goal of the season for the 2022 Golden Boot Award winner.

For the first time in nine years, the MLB postseason will not include the Houston Astros.
The Astros were eliminated from postseason contention Saturday, the penultimate day of the regular season, after the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians both won. Their elimination officially sets the AL playoff field, with the AL Central duo each securing a playoff spot.
The Penguins and Blue Jackets traditionally meet for two preseason games a year, convenient for all given the geography. They haven’t had a preseason game like this, which officially was a run of the mill NHL exhibition game.
