NEW ORLEANS – Quarterback Derek Carr looks a little like Drew Brees and talks like him. And in his New Orleans Saints’ preseason debut Sunday, he one upped him.
Before Brees’ Saints home debut in the 2006 season, he got lost on the way to the Superdome and arrived with only an hour or so to spare for a regular season game. All four Saints’ preseason games and the first two of the regular season were away as workers repaired the Superdome post Hurricane Katrina.

The NFL preseason continued Sunday. Here are all of the key performances from Week 1.
Saints kicker Blake Grupe entered Sunday as the archetypical player trying to make it in the NFL preseason.
The Sedalia, Mo. native and Arkansas State graduate went undrafted, despite scoring the second-most points in the history of the Sun Belt and putting together a decent fifth season at Notre Dame. He signed with New Orleans shortly after the draft ended, despite the fact the Saints already have a Pro Bowl kicker in Wil Lutz.
Grupe, however, emerged from the Saints’ 26–24 win over the Chiefs a cult hero after drilling the winning 31-yard field goal at the buzzer.

In ancient times, gladiators—the lowest caste of Roman society, often men with little to no status—would fight in arenas for the amusement of the patrician class.
2,000 years later, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk have spent much of this year considering an inversion of this concept. The two social media barons—both of whom have reportedly trained in martial arts—have publicly bandied about fighting each other, with UFC president Dana White going so far as to propose a potential match in the Colosseum.
LeBron James and Kevin Durant have dominated the NBA for over a decade. They’re household names that even in this stage of their careers still demand the ball and dictate a franchise’s direction. It will be strange when greats like them step to the side for the next generation, but Kevin Garnett—apparently—wants that day to be now.
One of the biggest storylines of the preseason is the San Francisco 49ers quarterback battle. Brock Purdy, a 2022 seventh-round pick, appears poised to start. But he’s recovering from offseason elbow surgery. Former No. 3 picks Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are in the mix, as well.
With Purdy out for the team’s first preseason game, the 49ers elected to start Trey Lance against the Las Vegas Raiders.

An NSFW video of Deebo Samuel asking two 49ers rookies to pay a more than $15,000 bill from Las Vegas went viral over the weekend, but it ended up being fake.
Samuel actually pulled a prank on the two rookies—Isaiah Winstead and Ronnie Bell—just to see what their reactions would be. The wide receiver quickly cleared up the video, which was posted on Winstead’s Instagram, by posting an explanation on Twitter. For one, the bill was only $2,500, he said.
“Lol was prank,” Samuel wrote. “wouldn’t do our two rook wideouts like that funny to see how scared they got though.
