Could Bailey Zappe win the Patriots starting quarterback job?
While it may be unlikely, it’s not the first time the question has been asked. Zappe was impressive in relief of Mac Jones last season while Jones nursed a high ankle sprain, and Zappe impressed once again in Thursday night’s preseason debut.
Jones was a healthy scratch on Thursday night against the Texans, so Zappe got the nod. The second-year quarterback went 12-of-14 passing against Houston for 79 yards.

As the Women’s World Cup continues through to the quarterfinals and semifinals, the USWNT is left to ponder what went wrong. Carli Lloyd, the former USWNT midfielder and current Fox Sports analyst, believes she knows where the program has gone awry.
On a Fox broadcast, Lloyd explained that the issues with the U.S. soccer program comes from a lack of development at the youth level.
“This is a humble moment for the program—for the players, for the coaching staff—and it’s a wake-up call for the entire program,” Lloyd said.
I caught the Texans while they were in Foxboro—Houston and New England are the 17th and 18th teams I’ve seen this summer—for their preseason opener. The game itself, not so interesting. But the team in Houston, for the first time in a little while, should be …
• C.J. Stroud had a handful of “welcome to the NFL” moments Thursday.
Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell means business when it comes to not allowing shortcuts in the program.
Fickell and the Badgers open the season week one against Buffalo, and the energy around the program is insane.
For the first time in a long time, it really does feel like Wisconsin is trending up after years of mediocrity and disappointing play.
Well, one of the reasons for the turnaround before a single regular season snap is an attitude shift behind the scenes.
Luke Fickell doesn’t let Wisconsin players take shortcuts.
What an catch!
Something is in the water when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings wide receivers. The team just keeps managing to find talent at the position, and it’s far too early to anoint Jordan Addison as a “great one,” but damn if this moment on Thursday night wasn’t impressive as hell.

Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud made his professional debut on Thursday night against the Patriots as the team kicked off preseason action.
Stroud’s performance against a solid Patriots defense left much to be desired. In two series, Stroud finished 2-for-4 passing for 13 yards and an interception.
Despite the interception, Stroud remained positive after his first outing. He thought his debut was “solid” and called the errant pass that was intercepted by Patriots DB Jalen Mills a “learning opportunity.”
“Just trust my eyes,” Stroud said of his interception.
Fantasy football draft season is now in full swing, as managers are preparing for any number of upcoming drafts (if you’re me, at least 14) in an effort to achieve what is the ultimate goal … winning a 2023 fantasy league championship.
In the countless best-ball and mock drafts I’ve already done, one thing is becoming abundantly clear: The wide receiver position is going to be even more prominent than ever in the first and second rounds. What’s more, you can now wait a few more rounds on running backs and still get a good group with real potential.
Coach Billie Moore sat her basketball team down before its 1976 silver medal match against Czechoslovakia at the Montreal Summer Games. The squad had endured a long and winding journey to get to this point, now on the precipice of history. Moore delivered an important and prescient message to her players: win this game and they would forever shift the trajectory of women’s sports in the United States. Forty-seven years later, that silver-medal-winning team is being recognized for doing just that, as the first women’s basketball team to represent the U.S. at the Olympics.
Let’s head into the weekend with a couple of fun MLB bets!
The Rockies head west to face the Dodgers Friday night at Chavez Ravine. It feels like a good time to play the over on the run total, because — as we have mentioned before — the Dodgers dominate left-handed pitching and games at Dodger Stadium are averaging 9.64 runs this season. Let’s get into some more detail.
Lance Lynn gets the start at home tonight for the Dodgers. Lynn has been strong in his two starts since joining the Dodgers, allowing only four earned runs across 13 innings pitched.
Steve Eubanks, the now-former senior writer for Global Golf Post, resigned from his position after alleging that the publication would not publish Christian and pro-life elements from an interview he did with pro golfer Amy Olson, who has competed while pregnant this year.
The situation began prior to the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach in July when the publication asked Eubanks, who is based out of Atlanta, to put together a preview story.
