SI.com’s Week in Wrestling provides beneath-the-surface coverage of the business of pro wrestling.
Behind the scenes of Blood & Guts
The crowd at TD Garden audibly gasped when Jon Moxley slammed Kenny Omega onto a bed of nails during last week’s Blood & Guts match on Dynamite.
That is something you won’t see anywhere other than AEW in mainstream American wrestling. But the bout wasn’t just an over-the-top bloodfest (though that was certainly part of it).

Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki made quite the web gem Tuesday night in a matchup with their crosstown rival White Sox.
In the seventh inning, White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada blasted a ball to right field with the bases loaded and nobody out. But Suzuki tracked back to make an outstanding catch, reaching over the wall to bring back what would have been a grand slam and turning instead into a harmless sacrifice fly. And while the Cubs did hold a six-run edge at the time, Suzuki’s catch certainly made what ended in a 7–3 victory for the Cubs a bit more secure.
San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has been working hard during the offseason, and according to his head coach Kyle Shanahan, he’s more than happy to share his progress.
While Samuel is a key piece of the 49ers offense, the self-described “wide back” wasn’t impressed by his performance in 2022.
“I don’t think Deebo had to be that harsh on himself to you guys, but it was cool to watch,” Shanahan said, per NBC Sports.
Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs spoke with reporters Wednesday for the first time about why he missed the first day of Buffalo’s mandatory minicamp in June.
The three-time Pro Bowler stated his absence was due to “family” issues. Diggs also added he and McDermott had a conversation about the situation but that he prefers to keep things “in house.”
“I attributed it to family matters,:” Diggs said, per ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg. “I don’t like dancing around things… Everybody has family matters. We had a conversation.

As the potential blockbuster trade that sent Bradley Beal to the Suns began to come together, the former Wizards guard thought it would look quite a bit different when all was said and done.
The deal that sent shockwaves through the NBA included Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and multiple second-round picks going back to Washington in exchange for Beal.
But as Beal revealed during a recent interview with Deyscha Smith of SLAM, he initially wondered why Phoenix was trading Devin Booker—pointing to the belief that he thought the star guard was a part of the package.
In the wake of French soccer star Kylian Mbappé’s reported billion-dollar offer to join a soccer league in Saudi Arabia, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith gave his take on who the most valuable athlete in America’s four major sports leagues.
His answer: LeBron James.
“LeBron James is a global, iconic brand, as well as the NBA being a global, iconic brand,” Smith said. “And I think when you think about LeBron James, it’s not just his greatness as a basketball player, it’s also the conscientious observer that he is. There’s no indifference when it comes to him.

Justin Thomas spent time studying Brooks Koepka and others at majors this year. Now he’s hoping that influence leads to a Tour Championship run.
Justin Thomas is a big golf fan. The former No. 1 in the world loves to watch his fellow competitors tee it up and even learn from them.
Thomas, ahead of this week’s 3M Open in Minneapolis, acknowledged Brooks Koepka’s performance at the PGA Championship was something to study.
“I felt like I learned from watching Brooks [Koepka] at the PGA,” Thomas said.
It certainly didn’t take long for 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young to convince Panthers coach Frank Reich he is ready to start in Week 1 on the road against the Falcons.
On Wednesday, after just one practice, the former Heisman trophy winner was named “QB 1” for Carolina.
After beating out veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton for the job, Young said this will not change his daily preparation as he looks forward to mastering his role as a starting signal-caller at the next level.
With less than a week until the MLB trade deadline, it’s time to analyze some of the most frustrating teams of the season.
We’ll start with (who else?) the Mets.
What’s their deal?
In a vacuum, this season hasn’t been truly dreadful. The Mets have shown moments—whole games, even, if not whole series!—when they have looked like the club they were assembled to be. Pete Alonso is within reach of the NL home run crown despite spending time on the injured list.
