With less than a week until the MLB trade deadline, it’s time to analyze some of the most frustrating teams of the season.
We’ll start with (who else?) the Mets.
What’s their deal?
In a vacuum, this season hasn’t been truly dreadful. The Mets have shown moments—whole games, even, if not whole series!—when they have looked like the club they were assembled to be. Pete Alonso is within reach of the NL home run crown despite spending time on the injured list.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed tight end Evan Engram to a three-year, $41.25 million deal earlier this month. Many around the NFL wondered what that meant for Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet.
That answer came on Wednesday. The Bears signed Kmet to a four-year contract extension worth $50 million with nearly $33 million in guaranteed cash.
Another deal: Bears and TE Cole Kmet reached agreement on a four-year, $50 million extension, including $32.8 million guaranteed and $20 million in new first-year cash, per me and @FieldYates.
University of Iowa offensive lineman Gennings Dunker is starting to build a dynasty. Not on the football field, but in the hay bale toss.
The former three-star sophomore defended his title in the legendary event last week.
Located about 20 minutes away from the University of Iowa is the small town of Solon, Iowa. The town of just under 3,000 is not much bigger than a square mile, but it is home to one of the most legendary events in the state — Solon Beef Days.

When Stefon Diggs missed the first day of Bills mandatory minicamp in June, it generated an air of concern for Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott.
Even with McDermott later clarifying the situation involving his three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, the reason behind Diggs’s absence is still unknown. Despite the previous friction and flare between the two, McDermott told reporters that Diggs is currently in “a good spot” with the team.
“Stef is ready to practice,” McDermott said, per Alex Brasky of the Batavia Daily News. “He is in the locker room right now. . . .
Even prior to the start of NBA free agency, it appeared that Austin Reaves was bound to remain with the Lakers for the foreseeable future. The buzz surrounding Los Angeles was that the franchise was willing to match any offer Reaves—a restricted free agent—received.
Apparently, that buzz may have worked in the Lakers’ favor, as Reaves eventually signed a four-year, $56 million contract extension, but as Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto reports, that salary amount was nearly much higher.
It appears the mystery has been solved as Brock Purdy returns to practice and takes QB1 reps. That’s just one of the many notable moves around training camps.
