Duke and Clemson opened their seasons with a Monday night matchup at Wallace Wade Stadium, and the Blue Devils pulled off the remarkable, stunning the nation’s No. 9 team with one of college football’s biggest early-season upsets.
Duke held the Tigers scoreless during the second half in what was a resounding 28–7 victory. The win the first time the program has beaten a top-10 team since toppling No. 7 Clemson in 1989, which came during Steve Spurrier’s last season as Duke’s head coach.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard the terms ‘Clemsoning’, but it returned in magnificent fashion thanks to the Duke football team. After an off-season filled with questions, Clemson fell dramatically short of looking like a team worthy of fighting for an ACC title, losing 28-7 in horrible fashion.
It was Tim Elko’s Duke Blue Devils who decided to keep college football fans on the edge of their couches Monday night, pulling off the impressive upset.
The first game of the season was one to forget for Dabo Swinney as the 9th-ranked Tigers were held to just a touchdown and struggled on defense as well.
David Fry threw all 64 of his pitches under 60 MPH in the team’s 20-6 loss to the Twins on Monday night.
Guardians starting pitcher Lucas Giolito had a disastrous outing Monday against the Twins, surrendering nine earned runs across just three innings of work.
In doing so, Giolito achieved an extremely rare and unfortunate feat, becoming the first player since 1899 to surrender eight earned runs in a start for three different teams in the same season, according to OptaSTATS.
The 29-year-old landed in Cleveland after being included in the mass exodus of waivers by the Angels. Anaheim had only acquired Giolito from the White Sox at the MLB trade deadline.
Shohei Ohtani’s agent said Monday that he plans to continue to both pitch and hit, after he undergos “some type of procedure” on the tear in his pitching elbow.
College football Week 1 absolutely delivered as fans are ecstatic to have football back in full-force. Deion Sanders led the Colorado Buffaloes to a massive upset over TCU in his first game. Florida State routed LSU in the second half to capture a huge victory. But perhaps the most interesting story came from Duke Blue Devils quarterback Riley Leonard.
The final game of Week 1 came in former of a Labor Day night game between the Clemson Tigers and the Duke Blue Devils. The Tigers entered as a heavy favorite, despite playing in Durham.
After leading the Blue Devils to an impressive 9-4 mark last season, Duke’s talented quarterback Riley Leonard has one very important person in life making sure his ego is always kept in check.
In order to avoid getting too over confident with the praise and accolades, Leonard has his mother Heather do her part to keep him motivated. Leonard’s mom texts the junior quarterback “you suck” before every game and he wears a bracelet with those exact words as a reminder that he needs to keep striving to reach new heights.
The Guardians were outclassed by the Twins on Monday in a lopsided 20–6 defeat during which catcher David Fry came on to pitch in the sixth inning.
Fry ended up tossing four innings on the mound, and it wasn’t pretty. The 27-year-old surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and ended the game with a pitch count of 64.
After the loss, Cleveland’s official X account, formerly Twitter, tried to laugh it off with a comical post, jokingly providing an update on Fry’s pitching availability for Tuesday’s game.
