The Astros took a 3–2 series lead over the Rangers in Game 5 of the ALCS on Friday, powered by a dramatic ninth-inning home run by Houston star Jose Altuve. Massive late-game home runs for both teams bookended a heated bases-clearing skirmish on the field, ensuring that the game would go down as one of the highlights of the 2023 postseason.
With the Astros trailing, 4–2, with two runners on and no outs in the top of the ninth, Altuve drilled a pitch to left field that just cleared the wall and the glove of Evan Carter.

Michael Andretti is a condifent dude.
Despite the majority of the ten existing Formula 1 teams voicing reservations or straight-up saying they didn’t support an Andretti entry, Michael Andretti says his organization is still targeting a 2025 debut.
Andretti was on hand Friday at the United States Grand Prix, and he addressed some of the pushback his proposed team has been getting.
“I don’t know. It’s a mystery to me in some ways, why they’re pushing back,” he said, per Sky Sports.
A wild, bench-clearing dust-up between the Astros and Rangers led to multiple ejections on Friday night as things got heated in Game 5 of the ALCS.
The skirmish occurred after Rangers slugger Adolis García took a 99-mph fastball off his left arm on the first pitch from pitcher Bryan Abreu with Texas leading 4–2 in the bottom of the eight inning. The errant toss frustrated Garcia, whose epic sixth-inning home run gave the Rangers the lead.
García then began chirping with Astros catcher Maldonado, prompting both dugouts to empty as the altercation continued to escalate.
This weekend, the citizens of Philadelphia might even cheer Santa Claus.
Jolly St. Nick was actually booed and had to dodge snowballs at halftime of a Philadelphia Eagles game on Dec. 15, 1968, at Franklin Field in West Philly. In the throes of a 2-11 season and tied with Minnesota 7-7, Eagles fans voiced their frustration about their sixth losing campaign in seven years since winning the NFL championship in 1960.
But this weekend, they would probably cheer a Disney character as well.
In the sixth inning of Game 5 of the ALCS Friday evening, Rangers right fielder Adolis García hit the home run of his life—a three-run shot to put Texas ahead 4–2 in a tightly contested game between in-state rivals.
Little did García, who celebrated his home run accordingly with an emphatic bat spike, know his night was just beginning.
As he stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu struck García with a 98-mile-per-hour four-seam fastball. García immediately took exception, stepping toward Houston catcher Martin Maldonado.
Rangers All-Star Adolis Garcia may have given MLB fans the most electric home run celebration of the postseason on Friday after mashing a clutch moonshot in Game 5 of the ALCS.
With Texas trailing, 2–1, Garcia blasted the first pitch from Astros ace Justin Verlander into the stands for a massive three-run go-ahead homer.
Garcia’s bomb sent Rangers fans into a frenzy as the team took a 4–2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was the two-time All-Star’s epic bat spike before rounding the bases that made the sensational moment even more special.
The Houston Astros are in the midst of a Lone Star State ALCS, and famously superstitious starting pitcher Justin Verlander gave some insight into his current pregame meal.
I’m always fascinated by pre-game meals. When I was a kid, I couldn’t eat too much before playing a game or I’d get sick. Yet, while I had to be super conscious of this, I had teammates who would roll into the locker room with a slice of pizza and some cheese fries, get dressed, and then play like nothing was up.
Unreal.
Colorado and first-year coach Deion Sanders landed their first blue-chip high school quarterback prospect on Friday after four-star, class of 2025 QB Antwann Hill Jr. announced his commitment to the program.
Hill, a junior at Houston County High School in Warner Robins, Ga., chose Sanders’s Buffaloes over Penn State, Florida, and Alabama after receiving 20-plus offers, according to On3. Clemson, Georgia and LSU were also among the other programs vying to land Hill.
The Chiefs offense isn’t putting touchdowns on the board at the same rate as it has in previous years, but it is still an effective unit. With 15 offensive touchdowns on the year, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce & Co. rank sixth in the league, tied with the Eagles, Chargers and Commanders.
Big touchdowns call for big celebrations, and the Chiefs are no strangers to having fun on the gridiron while racking up scores and wins.
It doesn’t take much to reach the conclusion that the Heat haven’t had the greatest summer.
Following a euphoric, underdog run to the Finals, the league’s runner-up lost guard Gabe Vincent to the Lakers on the first day of free agency. The following day, reports surfaced that free agent Max Strus, another key piece of last season’s club, would be headed to the Cavaliers.
