NEW YORK — Finally, after rescuing the Yankees from historic failure to return them to merely moribund, the hero made his first mistake of the night. DH Aaron Judge wound up for a celebratory high five with right fielder Oswaldo Cabrera—and missed. Judge had to swing back around and grab Cabrera on the glove.
It’s hard to blame them. Before they beat the Nationals 9–1 on Wednesday, the Yankees hadn’t enjoyed a victory in nine games, since Aug. 11. (Perhaps more remarkably, until Judge homered in the first, they hadn’t even held a lead since Aug. 14, a span of 61 innings.

As the ball boys and girls ran onto the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday night for the U.S. Open’s “Stars of the Open” event, one ball boy stood out from the rest: Heat star Jimmy Butler.
The six-time NBA star was decked out in full ball boy garb, and he got to work on the court during the match between world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 10 Frances Tiafoe.
But, Butler didn’t stay put on the sidelines. At one point, he grabbed a racquet and jumped onto the court prepared to play Alcaraz, the reigning U.S. Open champion.
Hope had been all but lost for the Yankees going into Wednesday night’s game against the Nationals. New York had dropped nine straight and fallen to 60–65 on the year, making any sort of late-season push seem hopeless.
But no one seemed to tell Aaron Judge that.
The star outfielder exploded for a career night Wednesday, smashing three home runs to finally snap the Yankees’ losing streak and power New York to a 9–1 victory. Judge’s performance marked the first time in his accomplished career that he’d hit three homers in a single game.
