The pitch clock era is finally here—and it’s spectacular.
MLB introduced the concept of a pitch clock in spring training, and the effect was immediate. Game times were 26 minutes shorter on average compared to last year’s spring training, and fans eagerly awaited the results of the pitch clock on actual games.
If Opening Day is any indication, the new setup will have a substantial impact.

Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright kicked off MLB’s 2023 Opening Day with pure fire, despite the fact he wasn’t playing against the Blue Jays.
Wainwright, who was unable to make his sixth Opening Day start of his career due to a groin injury, shocked everyone with a sensational rendition of the national anthem. 
The veteran pitcher who is playing his 18th and final season, was placed on the IR on Thursday. Wainwright, suffered the injury during a workout with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

MLB established a few new rules this season, including one that pitchers are only allotted two pickoff throws during each at-bat.
Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. tested this new rule on Opening Day on Thursday vs. the Nationals. Acuña is known as a speedster—he finished seventh in the league last season with 29 stolen bases, and has 107 in his five-year career. Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin was well aware of this, and made sure to keep an eye on Acuña in the top of the first inning.

MLB umpire Laz Diaz was not well received by Yankees fans on Opening Day on Thursday in the Bronx. Although New York came out on top, and Diaz had a decent day behind the dish, he was mercilessly booed for hating fun.
As Josh Donaldson stepped into the box with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, a light blue balloon made its way to the plate. The origin of the balloon is unknown, and the message written on the balloon was unclear.
It didn’t matter. Diaz was having none of it. He picked up the balloon, turned toward the dugout and it a strong squeeze.

Nathan Peterman is reportedly re-signing with the Bears ahead of the 2023 season, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Peterman returns to Chicago for his seventh NFL season and second year with the Bears. He will serve as a backup to starter Justin Fields, alongside former Panthers quarterback PJ Walker, as a part of a franchise seeking to make strides in the NFC North in 2023.
The 28-year-old played in three games for the Bears last season, including Chicago’s 29–13 loss to the Vikings in its season finale when Fields did not play due to a hip injury.
