The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Thoroughbred Triple Crown, will take place on Saturday at Laurel Park in Maryland. Fourteen 3-year-olds will vie in the 1 3/16 miles race that carries a $2 million purse.
Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo is bypassing this race, which will be run at Laurel while Pimlico Race Course is rebuilt. Three horses that ran in the Run for the Roses will come back after two weeks and try to win the Preakness.
The betting is wide open. Any number of horses can win and the one that crosses the finish line first should pay a nice price even if favored.

The Toulouse left-back is an atypical profile among full-backs. Standing at 1.88m and blessed with extraordinary physical attributes, the Toulouse native is a real cannonball down the left flank.
This week, Dave Allen faces perhaps his toughest test yet, as he fights Filip Hrgovic in a much-anticipated heavyweight clash.
Allen (25-8-2, 20 KOs) has undergone somewhat of a career resurgence in recent years, with fans galvanised by his unfortunate decision loss to Johnny Fisher in 2024 – a result that gave way to a stoppage win for Allen in their rematch last spring.
And while Allen, 34, was outpointed by Arslanbek Makhmudov in October, he bounced back with an emphatic first-round win over Karim Berredjem in February.

It is, perhaps, a measure of the quality of a sportsperson when a governing body is prepared to bend, break or challenge the rules in order to select them. Ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recognised that, in Jofra Archer, they had a special talent; the problem was that their own residency regulations meant that England were unable to select him until the winter of 2022. Those rules were relaxed; Archer became available; World Cup success and a captivating Ashes introduction followed.
