With a stretch of mediocrity in international play in the rearview mirror, Mexico is opting to make a change.
El Tri has fired coach Diego Cocca, the Mexican federation announced Monday morning—less than 24 hours after Mexico beat Panama 1–0 to finish third in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Mexico is 3-1-3 in its last seven matches, including draws with Jamaica on March 26 and Cameroon on June 10. On Thursday, the United States beat El Tri 3–0 in the Nations League semifinals in Las Vegas; the game was halted early due to homophobic chanting by Mexico’s fans.

Reds first baseman Joey Votto is set to make his season debut on Monday vs. the Rockies after missing the start of the season while rehabbing from shoulder surgery.
Votto has been out since August 2022, when he needed surgery on his left shoulder to repair his torn rotator cuff and biceps. The injury meant that the 39-year-old missed Opening Day for the first time since ’08, as he has been a durable player for most of his career.
In his season debut, Votto will be playing first base and hitting sixth as Cincinnati hosts Colorado.
