The Braves had a team-record eight players selected to this year’s MLB All-Star Game, and one of them wasn’t even on the big-league roster to start the season.
Starting pitcher Bryce Elder was announced as one of the National League’s reserve pitchers for the upcoming Midsummer Classic. But the right-handed pitcher was just trying to compete for the fifth starting spot in March. He didn’t get it and was optioned to the minors that same month.
He was eventually called up and he made the most of his opportunity. He now has the second-lowest ERA among starters in MLB at 2.

The Heat may want Damian Lillard, and the Blazers star himself may want to head to South Beach, but there are plenty of other teams at least contemplating the idea of throwing a wrench in that plan.
Although Miami doesn’t have the strongest potential trade package, the widespread belief still seems to be that the Heat will find a way to pull off a deal for Lillard.
But as longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein revealed on his Substack chat for The Stein Line, the Jazz and CEO Danny Ainge make for a “fascinating concept” in the Lillard discussions.

It was a tough Sunday for Haas, but their social media team might have won the day
It was a difficult Austrian Grand Prix for Haas F1 Team, at least on the track.
But their social media team made the most of it on Twitter.
Despite starting inside the top ten, Nico Hülkenberg did not finish on Sunday, when his VF-23 suffered a failure and he was forced to retire. Teammate Kevin Magnussen fared little better, spending his day at the back of the field before finishing 19th.
Being a hitter in Major League Baseball is a very difficult thing to be these days—there are just so many pitchers throwing really nasty stuff and sometimes at some very high speeds, too.
Imagine standing in the batter’s box, though, and looking out at the pitcher only to see him grinning like he knows exactly what’s about to happen. That just wouldn’t seem fair or fun.
How have recent perfect-game pitchers fared in their encore?
For the first time since the death of former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett on Tuesday, his girlfriend, Madison Carter, made a public statement about his tragic drowning in a lengthy Facebook post Sunday night.
Carter was with Mallett when he drowned in the Gulf of Mexico off the shore of Destin, Fla.
“I trust that God has a plan for everything, but I don’t think I will ever understand why this happened. I’m so sorry I couldn’t save you, and I hope you know how hard I tried,” Carter wrote.
After Dillon Brooks was dragged thru the mud for weeks and having to see the thousands of memes about his next stop being China, he and his agent got the last laugh. After Brooks inked a massive new contract with the Houston Rockets, Brooks’ agent fired off a tweet in Chinese.
Brooks made major headlines during the NBA playoffs when he called LeBron James old during the opening-round matchup between his then-Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Spiranac, the golf influencer, took to Twitter and shared her thoughts on Rickie Fowler’s epic win at the Rocket Mortgage.
Rickie Fowler snapped his four-year, four month winless streak Sunday with an epic playoff victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Fowler outlasted Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin to capture his sixth PGA Tour win of his career.
Fan reactions went viral as the fan favorite was finally back in the winner’s circle. Even some of his PGA Tour buddies like Justin Thomas chimed in. But they weren’t alone.
The Heat seem prepared to do almost anything to acquire Damian Lillard via trade this offseason. But the key word is almost, as it appears Pat Riley and Co. are locked in on the idea of creating the NBA’s next big three.
As Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel told NBA TV, Miami essentially has offered the Trail Blazers just about anyone on the Heat roster with the exception of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
Joshua Shaw, a 27-year-old carpenter, passed away on June 15 while working on a scoreboard at Lambeau Field. More than two weeks later, the Green Bay Packers have confirmed the death and tragic accident.
Mavid Construction, the company Shaw worked for, confirmed his death last month and Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy addressed the accident in his monthly column on July 1. Murphy noted the incident occurred “in” the scoreboard.
“Joshua Shaw, a carpenter with Mavid Construction, recently lost his life in an incident in the north end zone scoreboard.
