F1’s marquee event got underway with the first practice session on Friday
Speaking with the media on Thursday ahead of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, championship leader Max Verstappen admitted that the streets of Monte Carlo might make for a “closer” race than any other so far this Formula 1 season.
If Friday’s first practice session is any indication, that prediction might just come true.

England’s Harry Hall came out red hot at Colonial Country Club as the early leader on Thursday at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
After shooting a bogey-free 8-under 62, Harry Hall made quite the introduction in his first start at Colonial Country Club for the Charles Schwab Challenge. He is the early leader after the first round Thursday.
One of his signature looks is wearing the Ben Hogan hat and playing at one of Hogan’s courses he belonged to.
Reminiscences of Hogan are everywhere at Colonial, including a seven-foot statue.

There’s no doubt starting pitching has been difficult this season, so on today’s list I have featured four pitchers that could be good replacements for any struggling studs. I am still not dropping Alek Manoah, Corbin Burnes  or Sandy Alcantara, but if you choose to have them ride the pine for a while or just play the matchups, that could be wise.

Following the Celtics’ 110–97 victory over the Heat that narrowed Boston’s Eastern Conference finals series deficit to 3-2, TNT’s Inside the NBA crew delivered its best version of late night television once again.
Charles Barkley, as usual, was the instigator, as he was given a sentence and asked to say it in a Boston accent.
“Saw Ernie at Fenway Park eating chowder on top of the monster,” was the sentence that Barkley was given.
Is Barkley a Bostonian? Of course not. Did he nail the accent? Of course not.

This offseason wasn’t a banner year for the 2020 first-round rookie class.
All told, only a dozen saw their fifth-year option picked up, while Packers quarterback Jordan Love received a one-year, $22 million extension in its place. The rest were all left without a contract moving forward, including notable names such as Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen, Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jets left tackle Mekhi Becton.

Jimmy Butler and the Heat failed again to close out the Eastern Conference finals against the Celtics on Thursday night, losing Game 5, 110-97, in Boston. 
The Heat still lead the series, 3-2, and only need a win at home on Saturday to advance to the NBA Finals. But their losses in the past two games have allowed the moment to shift in a big way over to the Celtics, who are looking to become the first team in NBA history to come back from a 3-0 playoff deficit.

Memorial Day weekend is a great time in the NFL. Teams are almost done with their OTA practices and veterans minicamps will soon be the next order of business before vacation at the end of June and early July.
That makes this a perfect time for an NFL power rankings post. Why?

The Boston Celtics saved their season again Thursday night, beating the Miami Heat, 110-97, in Game 5 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals to send the series back to Miami for a gigantic Game 6 on Saturday night. 
The Celtics came out flying and were never in any real danger of losing in front of their electric home crowd. Four of their starters, including Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, finished with over 20 points in what was a balanced and dominant showing from Boston.
The Celtics are trying to become the first team in NBA history to come back from a 3-0 playoff deficit.

It felt like a French comedy routine, one that had hardened into an annual tradition.
First, the setup: Walk through the grounds of Roland Garros, past the statue of Rafael Nadal—peeled from tennis’s Mount Rushmore—and enter its main stadium. There, Nadal stands in the anteroom before the entrance, before walking onto Court Philippe-Chatrier, which, for nearly 20 years, has doubled as his personal stage.

English soccer player Ivan Toney was looking at a 15-month suspension after accepting 232 breaches of the Football Association’s (FA) rules on betting. Instead, the 27-year-old has been hit with an eight-month ban after a psychiatry expert diagnosed him as a gambling addict.
Toney, a striker who has made one appearance for England in 2023, reportedly placed 13 bets on his own team to lose in seven different matches between August 2017 and March 2018. According to ESPN, he did not play in any of the matches he wagered on.
