In the South region, No. 1 seed Alabama will look to continue its dominant season. After logging a 29–5 record and capturing the SEC tournament title, the Crimson Tide were selected as the No. 1 overall seed in the Big Dance. Now, they’ll face off against either Texas A&M-CC or SE Missouri State as both teams look to remain on college basketball’s biggest stage with a victory in the First Four on Tuesday.

For all the jubilation and celebration of Selection Sunday there’s also a heaping helping of heartbreak. Some teams watched their dreams of becoming a Cinderella in March vanish, while others are playing in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, but left wondering how they got seeded so low.

To say that the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball season has been underwhelming might be an understatement. Going from the preseason No. 1 team to being left out of thew NCAA tournament is a massive fall, and an unexpected one for a team like UNC who returned four starters.
A year ago, the Tar Heels went to the national title game as a No. 8 seed. UNC brought back mostly the same roster minus forward Brady Manek, but the wheels totally fell off this year.

There is no overwhelming favorite entering the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament. Instead, the field is wide open and full of possibilities for the 68 teams who heard their name called on Selection Sunday. While Houston, Kansas, and Alabama will likely be the most popular picks in your office pool, this does feel like the type of year that a sleeper could potentially go all the way.
There are a few things we know about trying to pick a winner based on history. A No.
Alabama won the Southeastern Conference regular season last week.
The Crimson Tide won the SEC Tournament on Sunday.
And Sunday night, Alabama (29-5) received its first No. 1 seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament and will play Thursday 57 miles away in Birmingham against a No. 16 seed. That will be the winner of a play-in game between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Southeast Missouri State.
