The New York Mets have built one of baseball’s best teams, particularly on offense. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Juan Soto are the headliners, but arguably their most important player is third baseman Mark Vientos.
Vientos was outstanding in 2024, hitting 27 home runs with a .266/.322/.516 batting line, good for a 2.9 WAR season. Repeating that production makes the Mets lineup that much deeper and better. And while he certainly has the talent to do so, success is also about effort.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in seven sharp innings and Trea Turner had three hits in his return to the starting lineup as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Wednesday night.
Wheeler (1-0) allowed just one run and three hits. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the 26th time in his career by striking out three batters in the seventh.
Turner, who missed two games last weekend with lower back spasms, entered as a pinch hitter late in Philadelphia’s home opener Monday against Colorado.

EAST GREENWICH — The East Greenwich boys tennis team hasn’t wasted any time letting its Division I opponents know it means business.
Chasing trophies is something the Avengers have gotten used to and after getting bumped from D-II to D-I, it looks like they’re going to be after another one this spring. Hosting perennial powerhouse La Salle, EG used its experience to build a lead and the No. 3 doubles team of Arya Gaind and Kevin Hayes made sure the Rams’ comeback attempt fell short in a 4-3 statement win on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s game: Columbus 2, St. Paul 0
Replay: Angel Martinez knocked in Will Brennan before Will Wilson singled in Juan Brito as the Clippers’ two runs in the eighth inning were all they needed for the victory. Brito, Wilson and Kody Huff had two hits each for the Clippers, who had four pitchers scatter seven hits. Starter Parker Messick allowed three hits in for innings, and he was followed by Luis Frias (one inning), Zak Kent (two) and Parker Mushinski (two).
Next game: 6:15 p.m. Thursday vs. St. Paul at Huntington Park

BOSTON– Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 124-103 victory over the Boston Celtics:
– Yes, the goal is greater than learning experiences.
– And, yes, victories are paramount at this stage.
– But it sure helps going forward to know what you have going forward.
– That’s what made this one matter regardless of result.
– Pelle Larsson? Willing to stand up defensively to the likes of Jayson Tatum.
– Kyle Anderson? Still can slow play his way to meaningful scoring.
– Davion Mitchell? Won’t back down (even if that can be to his detriment).

The Yankees’ bats were kept in check by Zac Gallen, picking up just three hits against the right-hander before the offense woke up late in their 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a cold, windy night in The Bronx on Wednesday.
Here are the takeaways…
–Carlos Rodon‘s second start of the season wasn’t as good as his first, but if you tuned in for the first couple of innings you’d be surprised by how well the southpaw pitched.
In the first, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smashed a 94.2 mph fastball up in the zone that went into the second deck in left field.

Unless you’re a tech billionaire who fights crime to avenge the murder of his parents after a night out at the theater and to get over his fear of bats, I don’t think vigilante justice is a good idea.
But I think I can get behind some of the apparent vigilante action happening in Colorado these days.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, per The Denver Gazette, a woman in unicoprorated Silverthorne, Colorado called to report a man throwing bags of dog poo into her yard and onto her driveway.

Utah Football

As Utah rolls into week three of spring football, the team is focused on integrating new talent, fine-tuning the offense, and gaining a deeper understanding of its strengths and areas for growth.
For offensive lineman Caleb Lomu, he’s excited to be back on the field with the new guys on the offense, learning and expanding the playbook.
“We’ve got six practices down, the new offense is limited so far and the defense is looking great; obviously like we do every year, ” said Lomu.

The Logansport Iron Horses were just fine traveling 12 hours to Canada and knocking off a first-place team, but they’re still adjusting to their new environs at the Berry Bowl.
They were handed a 142-113 defeat by the Lebanon Leprechauns on Tuesday to drop to 0-2 at home.
It was a close contest most of the way, which included an entertaining back and forth third quarter. The Iron Horses were within 98-91 early in the fourth before the Leprechauns pulled away.
