The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in eastern Vigo County is getting $2.3 million infusion in advance of two major events.
The course will host the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships Nov. 21 of this year, and it will host the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Nov. 20, 2027.
The project, already underway at the course at 599 S. Tabortown St., includes $1.9 million in building, site, and landscape enhancements, as well as a $348,000 irrigation expansion.

REMINGTON — After losing a three-run lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Caston Comets came right back and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame in Monday night’s sectional championship game.
The Comets loaded the bases with no outs and London Herd lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Logan Mollenkopf on a bang-bang play at the plate to lift them to a 6-5 win over West Central in a thrilling final at the Class 1A Tri-County Sectional at Remington Community Park.
The No. 5-ranked Comets (21-5) won their first sectional title since 2022 and third all-time.

Jun. 2—VERMILLION — ‘Coach Piv’ is taking over Coyote softball.
The University of South Dakota announced Tuesday that Shannon Pivovar will be the program’s 11th head coach, replacing Robert Wagner, who led the Coyotes to their first-ever NCAA tournament berth in May but parted ways with the school soon after.
Pivovar was an assistant under Wagner for the last three years, and prior to that spent five years as the head coach at Division II USF.

Jun. 2—WATERTOWN — Maintaining its position from the opening day of competition, the Mitchell High School girls golf team earned a third-place finish at the Class AA state tournament on Tuesday at Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
Mitchell followed up a first-round 308 on Monday with a second-round 326 on Tuesday, totaling 634 strokes for the 36-hole tournament. Aberdeen Central repeated as state champions with a 603 (295-308), and O’Gorman slotted into the runner-up position at 626 (304-322).

PROVIDENCE – Tiverton overcame an early deficit, waited out a weather suspension that lasted nearly 44 hours and proceeded to repeat what it’s done so often over these past two Division III softball seasons. 
Win. 
The Tigers reset and were in command against Rogers in an extended winner’s bracket final that stretched into Tuesday night at Rhode Island College. What started as a four-run lead for the Vikings on Sunday morphed into a 14-9 triumph for Tiverton, with Liliana Luis gaining steam in the circle and Carlie Martin providing the key swing at the plate.

The Boston Red Sox traded David Hamilton as part of the deal to acquire Caleb Durbin last offseason. Hamilton has started to unlock his full potential with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Hamilton started 138 games for the Red Sox in three seasons. He was not a regular player, but he had great tools, most notable of which was his speed.

Jun. 2—WATERTOWN — The spring 2026 South Dakota High School Activities Association state individual and team golf champions were crowned on Tuesday, June 3.
The action took place at four golf courses around the state as the SDHSAA girls and Class B boys golf champions were decided.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi added his name to a rare list on Tuesday after taking a wicket with the first ball of the second ODI against Australia at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Opening the bowling for Pakistan, Shaheen dismissed Australia batter Alex Carey with the first delivery of the match. Carey was bowled, giving Pakistan an early breakthrough.
With that wicket, Shaheen became the third Pakistan captain to take a wicket with the first ball of an ODI, as per a News18 report.

This week’s special edition of the Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week determined our top local high school boys athlete for the spring sports season.
Wellington baseball’s Nate Blehm took top spring honors in the Fort Collins area with a tremendous two-way season on the diamond.
The junior could do it all for the Eagles.
That included leading Wellington to the program’s first-ever postseason wins and state appearance, making the Class 3A tournament.
Blehm was outstanding on all fronts this spring.
It has to start on the mound.
