On the occasion of a man’s death, society rushes to succinctly define that man. Jim Brown, the legendary Browns running back, has died, according to multiple reports. Brown’s wife, Monique Brown, confirmed the news of the icon’s death on Instagram Friday afternoon, announcing he “passed peacefully” in their Los Angeles home Thursday night.
He was 87 years old.
After turning in a statement performance in the Nuggets’ Game 2 win over the Lakers, Jamal Murray stamped his big night with a strong message to those still questioning his game since his return from injury.
The veteran guard logged a 23-point fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 37 points on Thursday to propel Denver to a 2–0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Murray’s red-hot performance boosted his playoff scoring average to a career-best 27.
Saying that Jim Brown was one of the greatest players of a sport in American history is heady enough without recognizing that, in addition, his legacy includes the off-field blueprint for the modern athlete. This, at a time of social unrest and upheaval, may end up being the headline on his life and career.
It is undoubtedly an imperfect legacy, as Brown also left behind a string of accounts of violence against women.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith was not thrilled about LeBron James’s shot selection in key moments of the fourth quarter in the Lakers’ 108–103 loss to the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday.
While James finished one rebound shy of a triple-double—registering 22 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds—the Lakers star went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc while the Nuggets used a stunning fourth quarter performance from Jamal Murray to take a commanding 2–0 lead in the best-of-seven-series.
The sports world is paying its respects to the late, great Jim Brown, widely regarded as one of, if not the best to ever step on a football field. One athlete who had immense respect for Brown, and even knew him personally, is fellow NFL great Eddie George.
George appeared on OutKick Hot Mic and told hosts Jonathan Hutton and Chad Withrow that he’d describe Jim Brown as “Superman.”
I can recall my father always talking about the great Jim Brown,” George said. “And he would always refer to him as the greatest he’s ever seen.
A memorable moment of respect from Lakers star LeBron James from back in 2015 went viral after the death of NFL legend Jim Brown on Friday.
Prior to tip-off of the Cleveland’s victory over the Warriors in Game 3 of the 2015 NBA Finals, James put his hands together and bowed in the direction of Jim Brown, who was sitting courtside. Given that the clip showed arguably one of three greatest basketball players ever paying homage to one of football’s greatest running backs, the moment became one of the lasting images from that year’s NBA season.

The PGA Championship week continues to weigh heavy on Young as he had to take a 2-stroke penalty during his second round.
Cameron Young’s tough luck at Oak Hill Country Club continues as he received a two-stroke penalty during his second round at the PGA Championship. After signing for a 4-over 74 on Day 1 of the event, Oak Hill gripped even tighter on him.
During his second round, he was on the par-4 16th hole with a 59-foot birdie putt — he hit it short, and that is when the simple mistake happened.
NFL pioneer Jim Brown died at the age of 87 in his Los Angeles home Thursday night. The former Browns running back “passed peacefully,” according to his wife, Monique Brown.
Considered the greatest running back in league history, Brown spent his entire nine-year career in Cleveland, picking up MVP awards, Pro Bowl selections and the team’s lone championship in 1964.
Over the decades, Sports Illustrated has captured Brown’s career and impact—his playing days, acting and activism, and controversial personal life. Below is some of the best from the pages of SI.
