Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers was on the wrong side of history during Boston’s Opening Day game against the Orioles.
Devers became the first MLB player to strike out on an automatic strike call from a violation of the league’s new pitch clock. The 26-year-old struck out as the leadoff hitter in the eighth inning as the Red Sox trailed the Orioles, 10–4.
Per the league’s news rule, a batter must be ready for the pitch or “attentive to the pitcher” with eight seconds remaining on the pitch timer.

It’s safe to state that Jacob deGrom’s debut with the Rangers did not go as planned.
The two-time National League Cy Young winner failed to make it out of the fourth inning on Opening Day against the Phillies.
DeGrom gave up six hits and five earned runs in only 3.2 innings. Despite striking out seven batters, the right-hander allowed six extra base hits—three doubles, two triples and one home run—making for the most the veteran ace has ever surrendered in a start in his career.
DeGrom will not start his Rangers’ career with a loss, despite the poor outing.

Fans have been clamoring for it for years, but the Eagles will be bringing back Kelly green uniforms at some point.
When that exactly remains to be seen, but, hey, at least it’s happening.
According to Sportslogos.com, it has been a year since Eagles owner, chairman, and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said the team had plans to bring back their old uniforms. That was the extent of what was known about the throwback uniforms, but on Tuesday, Lurie once again confirmed that the Kelly greens were still happening.
“I’m super excited,” Lurie told the media at the NFL Annual Meeting.

The pitch clock era is finally here—and it’s spectacular.
MLB introduced the concept of a pitch clock in spring training, and the effect was immediate. Game times were 26 minutes shorter on average compared to last year’s spring training, and fans eagerly awaited the results of the pitch clock on actual games.
If Opening Day is any indication, the new setup will have a substantial impact.
MLB 2023 Preview: Predictions, New Rules, Schedules, News and Analysis
Games lasted an average of three hours and six minutes during the 2022 regular season.

Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright kicked off MLB’s 2023 Opening Day with pure fire, despite the fact he wasn’t playing against the Blue Jays.
Wainwright, who was unable to make his sixth Opening Day start of his career due to a groin injury, shocked everyone with a sensational rendition of the national anthem.
The veteran pitcher who is playing his 18th and final season, was placed on the IR on Thursday. Wainwright, suffered the injury during a workout with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

MLB established a few new rules this season, including one that pitchers are only allotted two pickoff throws during each at-bat.
Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. tested this new rule on Opening Day on Thursday vs. the Nationals. Acuña is known as a speedster—he finished seventh in the league last season with 29 stolen bases, and has 107 in his five-year career. Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin was well aware of this, and made sure to keep an eye on Acuña in the top of the first inning.

MLB umpire Laz Diaz was not well received by Yankees fans on Opening Day on Thursday in the Bronx. Although New York came out on top, and Diaz had a decent day behind the dish, he was mercilessly booed for hating fun.
As Josh Donaldson stepped into the box with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, a light blue balloon made its way to the plate. The origin of the balloon is unknown, and the message written on the balloon was unclear.
It didn’t matter. Diaz was having none of it. He picked up the balloon, turned toward the dugout and it a strong squeeze.

When Adam Wainwright retires from baseball, which might be coming sooner than later, the next chapter of his life could come in front of a microphone. The 41-year-old Cardinals pitcher has the voice of an angel— who knew?!
Wainwright, a three-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove award-winner, and World Series champion has a love of music that resulted in a really special surprise on Opening Day. Shortly after both St. Louis and Toronto’s lineups were introduced, it was time for the national anthem.

The 2023 MLB season is starting with yet another embarrassment for Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno.
Moreno, whose net worth is estimated at $4.1 billion, is proving his bonafides as one of baseball’s cheapest owners yet again.
He famously was one of just a few owners to vote against raising the luxury tax threshold. Even a minimal increase was seen as unacceptable for Moreno, who’s steadfastly refused to spend above the tax level. Despite having the benefit of a massive Southern California market.
