Even after the winning numbers popped up, after Jamin Dershowitz, the NBA lawyer charged with locating the winning combination of Ping-Pong balls on one of eight poster boards inside a sealed-off ballroom on the first floor of McCormick Place announced “San Antonio,” Brian Wright didn’t flinch. No clap, no fist bump. Certainly not the two-handed table slam and excited roar his boss, Spurs managing partner Peter Holt, let out after San Antonio’s placard was revealed on ESPN an hour later. In the moment the franchise was changed forever, the Spurs GM was motionless.

Daniel Bard recognized the knot in his stomach. He recognized the racing mind that kept him awake at night. He recognized the tension in his muscles as he drove to the ballpark before games. And he knew these symptoms all stemmed from a feeling he was all too familiar with: the sudden inability to throw a baseball where he wanted.
He recognized it all from more than a decade ago, when an extremely public bout with the yips sent him searching for answers for seven years. It was like stumbling around in a dark room, groping desperately for the exit.
Gregg Popovich and the Spurs were the clear winners, but what about the Blazers and Damian Lillard? Plus: Unkind bounces for the Pistons.
The Denver Broncos recently signed quarterback Ben DiNucci, who led the XFL in passing yards and touchdowns in 2023, to add a bit of depth behind Russell Wilson. While he has previous NFL playing experience, Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton quickly reminded DiNucci that he’s no longer in the XFL.
While participating in training camp earlier in the week, DiNucci threw an interception that caught the attention of Payton. The veteran head coach took DiNucci’s mistake and turned it into a reality check while also keeping the mood light.
1. Sports fans want two things. First and foremost, they want to see their teams win. When a team isn’t winning, all a sports fan wants is hope.
Hope was on full display in a San Antonio bar Tuesday when the Spurs won the draft lottery, which means phenom Victor Wembanyama.
I’m not sure the Spurs’ winning an NBA title would get this reaction. Everything about this video is perfect. The buildup, the tension, the payoff.

After the defending NBA champion Warriors were dispatched by the Lakers in the West semifinals, coach Steve Kerr addressed why he believed Golden State fell short of defending its championship.
Just days removed from Kerr saying the Warriors had maxed out their potential and weren’t a championship team, the longtime coach pointed to missing trust stemming from the training camp incident between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole.
Green punched Poole during a preseason practice and the video of the incident was leaked on social media.
The National Football League is filled with massive athletes, big uglies, mountain men (you get the point). It’s generally not a league for smaller athletes, and that’s been especially true at the most important position on the field, quarterback.
When we think of the great field generals, we think of big pocket passers like Peyton Manning (6’5” and 230 pounds) or Dan Marino (6’4” and 224 pounds). The list goes on and on, and it rarely includes quarterbacks who are under six feet tall.

Yankees-Blue Jays beef includes sticky stuff ejection, third base coach drama, and Aaron Judge’s celebrations
In the wake of Monday night’s game between the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays — and the escalating war of words following the Aaron Judge side eye heard around the world — baseball fans probably expected to see some strange things when the two teams squared off on Tuesday night in Toronto.
If so, the game lived up to expectations.
The title-favorite Celtics open up the Eastern Conference Finals at home Wednesday night against the Heat.
This has been a common playoff matchup in the last few years as Boston and Miami met on this stage in 2022 and 2020. The two teams split those meetings, though neither went on to win the championship. The Celtics, who finished with the second-best regular-season record in the league, have faced quite a bit of resistance so far in the postseason from the Hawks and 76ers while the Heat, who entered the playoffs as the No.
Spurs fans quite literally won the lottery Tuesday night when they learned they’d get the top pick in June’s NBA draft—essentially locking up France’s Victor Wembanyama. And on Wednesday morning, former San Antonio champion and France native Tony Parker shared quite a throwback of the 19-year-old phenom.
“Yesss he’s going to the Spurs!!! So proud of you,” Parker said in a tweet.
Parker posted a picture of what appears to be a very young Wembanyama wearing Parker’s No. 9 Spurs jersey.
