At its heart, March in college basketball is all about the aphorism survive and advance.
That goes for bottom-feeders, bubble teams and national title contenders alike—as No. 1 South Carolina found out Saturday afternoon.
The Gamecocks entered Saturday 30–0, in search of their first undefeated season in school history. Tennessee, however, played South Carolina tough in an SEC tournament semifinal and led the Gamecocks 73–71 with 1.1 seconds left on the clock.
That was when South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso made magic happen.

No. 15 Kansas was blown off the floor on the road at No. 1 Houston on Saturday, 76–46, but the bigger story coming out of the loss is the health of star forward Hunter Dickinson.
Dickinson left the second half of the loss on Saturday with an apparent shoulder injury after he fought for an offensive rebound. He immediately grabbed his shoulder and ran towards the Jayhawks’ bench, and eventually headed to the locker room.

Hunter Dickinson just went straight to the locker room after coming down with an apparent shoulder injury after this play. Not good for Kansas, esp.

South Carolina’s center had never made a three-pointer until she banked in a buzzer-beater to stun Tennessee
Head coach Dawn Staley has built the South Carolina Gamecocks into women’s college basketball’s biggest powerhouse. South Carolina has won two nation championships over the last six years, and it will enter the 2024 women’s NCAA Tournament as the top favorite to win it all again.
South Carolina was 30-0 entering its SEC tournament semifinal game against Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.

You don’t see NHL coaches getting ejected all that often, and it’s even less frequent that you see them nail their feet to the bench the way Philadelphia Flyers bench boss John Tortorella did and refuse to go to the locker room.
Oddly enough, Saturday night’s Flyers-Lightning game in Tampa included a celebration of the 2004 Lightning team that won the Stanley Cup nearly 20 years ago. That team was coached by — of course — John Tortorella.
However, that was where the fun stopped, because as soon as the puck dropped it was a nightmare for the Flyers.

Just in case you were wondering, or missed it amid all the Caitlin Clark craze, Iowa does have an excellent women’s basketball team – outside of Clark.
The No. 3 Hawkeyes showed that again Saturday in a complete, 95-68 victory over No. 3 seed Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at the Target Center in Minneapolis. No. 2 seed Iowa (28-4) will play No. 5 seed Nebraska (22-10) at noon Sunday on CBS in the tournament title game.

While the college basketball world was paying attention to Caitlin Clark in the Big Ten Women’s Tournament, the South Carolina women were on the brink of losing their first game of the season, until Tennessee’s defense fumbled that final play of regulation.
There weren’t many folks thinking this game would come down to the final shot, given that the Gamecocks were up 23 points at one point in the game. But, Tennessee ended up fighting back in the second half to cause the pro-Gamecock crowd to start preparing for the worst.
