What will Friday have for an encore?
Good morning, I’m Dan Gartland. I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by all the basketball that’s going to be on TV today.
In today’s SI:AM:

The tight end spent five years in Miami.
The Patriots are signing former Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki to a one-year, $9 million deal for the 2023 season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
Miami drafted Mike Gesicki in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Penn State, and the tight end had a solid five seasons with the team. Gesicki’s best two seasons came in 2020 and ’21. He surpassed 700 receiving yards both seasons, including a career high 73 catches in 2021.
Last year, however, Gesicki had a down year with just 362 receiving yards on 32 catches.
The Eagles signed a backup quarterback, someone former coach Chip Kelly tried hard to trade for in 2015.
Howard University got boat-raced by Kansas on the first day of the NCAA Tournament. And that wasn’t even the worst part of their day.
Moments after their 28-point defeat, the Bison took another L when Vice President Kamala Harris entered the locker room.
A Howard alum, Harris addressed the young men who had just lost the biggest game of their lives as if they had just completed their first day of kindergarten. In the cringe-worthy chat, Harris stopped just short of congratulating the boys for going poo-poo on the potty.
Not exactly an ideal Thursday.
The two have played their entire careers together.
The Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott after seven years with the team, marking the end of an era in Dallas. The running back was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 draft for the Cowboys, and leaves the team with the third-most rushing yards in franchise history.
With Elliott moving on, it seems like it will be an adjustment for the Cowboys quarterback. Dak Prescott was a fourth round pick during the 2016 draft, and he has spent his entire career playing alongside Elliott.
OUCH.
The men’s NCAA tournament is off and running and it didn’t take long for some madness to happen.
We saw a couple of big upsets on Thursday, with a No. 2 seed (Arizona) and a No. 4 seed (Virginia) being sent home in stunning fashion.
But you know what else we saw in the first full day of tournament action? One of the worst bad beats for bettors that you’ll ever see.
No. 1 seed Alabama, a 23.5 favorite over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, led by 24 points in the final seconds of the game. It appeared as if the time would run out and everyone who had that Bama bet would get paid out.
Mercyhurst hockey player Carson Briere has been suspended for throwing a woman’s wheelchair down a flight of stairs.
Briere, who is the son of Philadelphia Flyers interim general manager Daniel Briere, was captured on video throwing Sydney Benes’ wheelchair down the stairs at Sullivan’s Pub and Eatery in Erie, PA.
I usually don’t post anything serious on my twitter but something happened Saturday night and just can’t stomach the thought of this kid getting away with it. In the video below is a @MercyhurstU student and is currently on the @HurstMensHockey team. Carson Briere.
Philadelphia adds a signal caller with plenty of starting experience to its quarterback room
After a breakout season for Jalen Hurts in 2022, the Eagles are signing an experienced backup with 74 career starts under his belt as they seek to make another run at a Super Bowl in the coming year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Philadelphia has signed former Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota, the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL draft and four-year Titans starter.
Mariota’s deal is for one year, worth $5 million with an additional $3 million in incentives, according to the report.
South Carolina cut down the nets last season behind her standout performances. This year? The Gamecocks star is using her photographic memory for the game to outwit defenses.
It’s winter on the mainland, and Aliyah Boston—reigning National Player of the Year and pride of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands—is sitting in South Carolina’s practice facility, explaining how to get a taste of the Caribbean.
The Latvian 7-footer is enjoying arguably the best—and healthiest—season of his career. Washington needs all it can get from him to make a postseason push.
With the Wizards on the fringes of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt in the final weeks of the regular season, the club will gladly take all the contributions it can get the rest of the way; especially as it navigates one of the NBA’s most challenging schedules over that span.
That’s where Kristaps Porzingis, the quietly improved star, comes in.
