For the second straight year, a Michigan men’s basketball season has not gone according to plan.
In 2022-23, the Wolverines opened the season ranked No. 22 in the country but finished 18-16 and missed the NCAA tournament.
This year has gone even further sideways. Expectations were modest entering the season, but Michigan has nosedived to an 8-17 record with losses to Long Beach State and McNeese State.
With all eyes on coach Juwan Howard, Wolverines athletic director Warde Manuel offered the former NBA All-Star a vote of confidence Wednesday morning.

1. As we said in Tuesday’s Traina Thoughts, this year’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and Niners drew 123.4 million viewers.
Last year’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and Eagles drew 115.1 million viewers.
While an overtime game was obviously a huge reason for the ratings increase, there was also the Taylor Swift factor.
With so many non-football fans watching the Super Bowl, it was expected that the Swift Effect would be strong for the game. Sports Media Watch has an excellent and detailed breakdown of just how strong Swift impacted viewership for the big game.

Candace Parker caught some much-deserved heat last month after spewing criticism Jalen Brunson’s direction that simply did not add up. After weeks of backlash, the WNBA star is now trying to talk herself out of her self-created corner while not exactly backing down.
During TNT’s pregame show ahead of the January matchup between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, Parker decided to bring up Brunson’s performance during last year’s postseason.

Rudy Gobert is on his way to winning his fourth Defensive Player of the Year Award, which would tie him with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the most in NBA history.
With the All-Star break just a few days away, Gobert is a prohibitive favorite at SI Sportsbook with -901 odds to add to his trophy case. His role as the anchor of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ top-ranked defense has him well ahead of the field with roughly 30 games remaining.

The LPGA announced a new partnership with the Ford Motor Company, as the future of women’s golf appears brighter than ever.
The LPGA announced another massive win on Tuesday as they revealed a new title sponsor for the newly named Ford Championship next month.
The Ford Motor Company will sponsor the LPGA’s Ford Championship March 28th-31st at Seville Country Club in Gilbert, Arizona.
The deal is currently only for one year, but a longterm partnership is in the works.

Trenches are currently being dug for the next war of words to hit the sports media landscape. In this case, the belligerents are ESPN’s sleeve-eschewing megastar Pat McAfee and The Ringer’s top-cheese Bill Simmons.
This all started last month with Simmons critiquing the way McAfee analyzes sports on his show.
It flared up again just a few days back when McAfee took a shot at Simmons’ Super Bowl parlay bet that he did in partnership with FanDuel. 8,000 people took Simmons bet, however, it didn’t end up hitting.

In case you thought fans were the only ones annoyed by Tony Romo in the waning minutes of Sunday’s Super Bowl, think again!
Former Notre Dame and NFL coach Charlie Weis hopped on Sirius XM on Wednesday, grabbed Romo by the hair, dragged the embattled broadcaster straight to a locker and jammed him in there with the force of a thousand offensive linemen.
And you thought OutKick was critical of Romo!
“I listen to the end of the game and listened to Tony Romo ruin the moment. Just shut up and let us savor the moment. Just be quiet. Nantz had already said, ‘Jackpot.
