Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher will have a disciplinary hearing on Friday after levying a dirty hit to the head of New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.
The play in question came in the third period of Thursday’s game in Montreal. As Pelech moved the puck out of the New York zone, Gallagher skated towards him and hit him in the head with his elbow after Pelech had released the puck.

There’s no shortage of storylines heading into conference championship weekend. By Sunday night, the Super Bowl LVIII field will be decided.
Will it be a 49ers-Ravens rematch? Or how about 49ers-Chiefs once again? The Lions have no history in the Big Game, so a matchup with either Baltimore or Kansas City would mean the world to Detroit.
We know what the odds say — the 49ers and Ravens have been on a collision course for weeks — but there have already been four upsets in these playoffs and the Lions and Chiefs are both fully capable of adding to that tally.

In this week’s Establish the Fun, we look at the matchups that will determine the Super Bowl participants.
Welcome back to Establish the Fun, where football is fun and I’m establishing that with more excitement than Jim Harbaugh’s random tweet in 2015.
It’s Conference Championship weekend, which means that we’re simultaneously one step closer to the Super Bowl and one step closer to the final Establish the Fun of the year. I’m sure that I’m going to say it when we get there, but I just want to thank all of you for reading and following along.

Dawn Staley might have a future in stand-up comedy when she’s finished coaching basketball.
Staley’s South Carolina team, ranked first in the nation, defeated no. 9-ranked LSU 76–70 in front of a raucous Tigers crowd at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Thursday night.
LSU fans made their feelings towards the Gamecocks known throughout the night, booing both Staley and the players. When asked about the negative reception, Staley took the comedic route, cracking a joke that left reporters chuckling.

The question to San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was a simple one.
“How important is the 12th man going to be on Sunday?” a reporter asked Shanahan at a Thursday press conference.
The reporter seemed to be innocently asking for Shanahan’s opinion on the impact 49ers fans could have on Sunday’s NFC championship game at Levi’s Stadium against the visiting Detroit Lions. But Shanahan was quick to point out the reporter’s awkward mistake.
“We don’t call them the 12th man here,” Shanahan quipped with a smile, to a chorus of laughter in the room.

Yasiel Puig is tired of the narrative.
The former MLB star, who is currently playing in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, went viral on the internet after he was involved in a massive brawl during the second game of the winter league finals between his Tiburones de La Guaira squad and Cardenales de Lara.
One of Puig’s teammates, Maikel Garcia, seemed to overly celebrate his clutch, eighth-inning home run, to the chagrin of Cardenales catcher Carlos Narvaez, who exchanged words with Tiburones players, resulting in some pushing and shoving.

Kayshon Boutte of the New England Patriots was arrested in Louisiana on Thursday after state police were informed by a gambling company that their records showed that over 8,900 bets were placed by a prohibited individual.
Boutte was charged with one felony count of computer fraud, and one misdemeanor count of gambling underage. Details from the affidavit were truly stunning. Boutte’s bets ran the gamut from teams around the NCAA, to the NFL, including bets on his own LSU Tigers, where he was a player at the time.

The NBA announced the starting lineups for the 2024 All-Star Game on Thursday, headlined by the selection of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James to the midseason showcase for the 20th time in his career.
With that honor, the 39-year-old James surpassed another Lakers great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for the most All-Star selections in NBA history. James has been elected as an All-Star starter for 20 consecutive seasons and will serve as captain of the Western Conference team.
