There’s a reason that NFL coaches frequently talk about being effective in “all three phases” of a football game.
Sure, offense and defense get all the headlines. But special teams play a very important role in games.
That was very evident during the first half between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. To be fair, neither team was very effective in the “third phase” of the game in the first half, but the Dolphins were particularly impotent.

The Ohio State – Iowa game on Saturday was never in question as the Buckeyes dominated the Hawkeyes 35-7, but according to one ESPN writer, the blowout win had to “feel like a loss” for the undefeated Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes out gained the Hawkeyes 412 yards to 226 yards, forced three turnovers, and controlled the clock while quarterback Will Howard threw for four touchdowns and just four incomplete passes in his team’s win.

NFL referees frequently find themselves in the spotlight, and that’s almost never a good thing. Sometimes, it seems like football fans doubt that the officials even understand the game they’re supposed to be calling.
Well, during the Buffalo Bills/Houston Texans game Sunday, fans got more fodder suggesting that NFL referees might not actually know what sports they’re officiating.
During a scramble by Bills quarterback Josh Allen, a Texans’ defender forced Allen out of bounds and then the ball came out of Allen’s hand.

It’s going to be an interesting flight back to the United States for the New York Jets following Sunday’s bitter 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London because on that flight the Jets are expected to decide exactly what to do about trading for Davante Adams.
This could go one of two ways:
The Jets could see themselves as a 2-3 team and understand their playoff chances are already dim weeks into the season. They might understand that since 1990, teams that begin the year with a 2-3 record typically don’t rally to a postseason berth.
