Obscure players to the rescue
Super Bowl LVIII lived up to the billing. So evenly matched—a game so tight it took 75 minutes to decide a winner.
Patrick Mahomes has drawn comparisons to—and even some talk that he has surpassed—Tom Brady during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl run this postseason.
Such chatter resumed after the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 25—22 in overtime, on Sunday to secure their second straight championship, becoming the NFL’s first repeat champion since Brady’s New England Patriots two decades ago. During a postgame interview on NFL Network, Mahomes was asked if he hears the comparisons to Brady.

Details on the Chiefs’ victory celebration and whether Taylor Swift can attend
Still looking for a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift for your significant other?
How about bringing them to a Super Bowl parade?
For Kansas City Chiefs fans, that is a legitimate option this year. After defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to win Super Bowl LVIII, and become the first team since the New England Patriots in 2005 to win back-to-back titles, the Chiefs are set to hold their victory rally and parade on Wednesday, Valentine’s Day.
The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime Sunday, and it sounds like some 49ers players didn’t understand the playoff overtime rules heading into the big game.
In the postseason, both teams have a chance to possess the ball even if the first team scores a touchdown. In the regular season, if the first team to possess the ball scores a touchdown, the game would be over.
The New York Jets chose an interesting time to post a video teasing a uniform change for the 2024 NFL season: mere minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
While social media was buzzing in the aftermath of the Chiefs’ riveting 25–22 overtime win, the Jets randomly popped into fans’ timelines with a video promoting the uniform unveiling, which isn’t coming until April.
Jets owner Woody Johnson also posted a video, this one of various Jets players hyping up the new uniforms.
I wasn’t going to do this today, I swear. Honestly, I was watching the Super Bowl last night and at one point thought to myself, ‘You know what? Tony Romo isn’t terrible tonight.’
And then the final 30 seconds happened in overtime – the biggest 30 seconds of the entire NFL season – and Tony Romo found a way to undo everything he’d just done.
You were so close, Tony. All you had to do was put your head down, let Jim Nantz take us all home, and you were gonna be in the clear.
After weeks of beatings, you finally came up clutch and got the job done in crunch time.
In the aftermath of Super Bowl LVIII, Troy Aikman got served on social media for a post of his…from five years ago.
Back in September 2019, a Kansas City Chiefs podcast called “Time’s Ours” (which is affiliated with “The Athletic”) held a discussion in which they were trying to determine how good of a quarterback Patrick Mahomes could be. Remember, at this point in his career, he had yet to win a Super Bowl and had just finished his first full season as a starter.
Travis Kelce emerged from the double doors at 8:39 p.m. PST, nearly an hour after Patrick Mahomes connected with Mecole Hardman Jr. to give the Kansas City Chiefs back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
Kelce noticed NFL Network reporter and former star wideout Steve Smith Sr. The two hugged before Kelce hopped on the back of the cart to head over to the interview podium and discuss his thrilling 25–22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
Kelce finished Sunday night with 92 yards and nine receptions.
Sadly for Troy Aikman, the internet never forgets.
Immediately after Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes beat the San Francisco 49ers to win his third Super Bowl on Sunday night, NFL fans scoured the internet and resurfaced an old post from the ESPN commentator and Dallas Cowboys legend that aged like milk.
In September 2019—during Mahomes’s ascension in the NFL—Aikman saw a post on X, known as Twitter at the time, and had to weight in. Why? The post stated, “Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman’s career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games.

Kiptum was killed in a car crash in his home country of Kenya on Sunday.
The sports world lost one of its biggest stars on Sunday. Kelvin Kiptum, the current marathon world record-holder, was killed in a car crash at the age of 24.
According to a police statement, Kiptum lost control of his vehicle near Kaptagat in the southwest of Kenya, at 11 p.m. local time. The car went off the road and into ditch before colliding with a tree.
According to Nation, he was already dead by the time first responders arrived at the scene.

The Chiefs’ game-winning play in Super Bowl LVIII looked quite familiar. Andy Reid saved his best call for last.
For the first time since the 2004 season, the NFL has a repeat champion. The Kansas City Chiefs secured their second straight Super Bowl victory, and third in the last five years, in a 25-22 overtime thriller versus the San Francisco 49ers.
The game literally came down to the last play: with only six seconds remaining in overtime, Kansas City found itself down three points, and three yards from the 49ers end zone.
OK! Now that the fake Big Game is out of the way, let’s strap in, pull those belts tight one more time, and get ready for the real Super Bowl.
Welcome to the 2024 NASCAR season – and welcome to Daytona 500 week.
Best week of the season, and it ain’t close. Is it weird – sad? – that the best NASCAR week of the year is the first one? Sure.
Sort of has that it’s all downhill from here vibe to it, which is unfortunate given that there are 35 weeks left to go.
But whatever – no complaining today.

49ers players said that they did not know that overtime rules are different in the playoffs.
Super Bowl LVIII ended with the Kansas City Chiefs hoisting the Lombardi Trophy for the third time in a five-year span. Patrick Mahomes is inevitable and the Chiefs are officially a dynasty with nowhere to go, amazingly, but up.
Of the three titles that KC has won in this era, two of them have come against the San Francisco 49ers.
Ryan Clark has given the nod to Patrick Mahomes as the GOAT among NFL quarterbacks, or, at least he thought he did.
The debate about Tom Brady or Mahomes being the greatest quarterback of all-time ramped up ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, but hit an entirely new level after Mahomes led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl title in four years.

It might seem too early to crown him, but he’s redefining football as we see it.
LAS VEGAS, NEV. — As I sat in the sportsbook of the Wynn Las Vegas, surrounded by both Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers (more Niners than Chiefs fans), watching the Niners go up 19-16, then 22-19, there was a general unease that overcame the room. The excitement of taking the lead, then the realization of one thing:
Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes was going to rip their heart out once again.
Jason Kelce had so much fun over the past month supporting his younger brother, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs during their run to Super Bowl LVIII, so it only made sense for him to go all out at the team’s afterparty in Las Vegas.
And it sure looks like he did just that, as the Philadelphia Eagles center was seen partying with the team at a club while wearing a Lucha Libre mask, because of course.
Super Bowl LVIII is now in the rearview mirror, as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22 in overtime. The game wasn’t great statistically (or overall) until the fourth quarter and into overtime (only the second Super Bowl to go to an extra frame), when the Chiefs made big plays to tie and eventually win the contest.
If we eliminate the two pushes and one pick ’em game in the first 57 Super Bowls, favorites are now 28-27 (51%) against the spread. The 49ers were unable to cover the 2-point spread despite holding a 10-point lead in the first quarter.
Nebraska star Jaz Shelley pulled a bold move during a win over Iowa.
The Cornhuskers shocked and stunned the college basketball world by storming back against the Hawkeyes to win 82-79.
While fans were busy watching Caitlin Clark chasing the scoring record, Nebraska went to work chipping away at a double-digit deficit.
Shelly hit the go-ahead three with a little more than 30 seconds left, and did something Angle Reese made popular:
She hit Caitlin Clark with the “you can’t see me” motion.
Bold. Very bold.
This is the nature of the beast.
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year with their 25—22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Las Vegas, and star defensive tackle Chris Jones soaked in the moment afterward.
But Jones wasn’t alone in basking in the glory.
The Chiefs star, in pure elation, collapsed on his back onto the Allegiant Stadium turf, where he was joined by coach Andy Reid, who put his hands on Jones’s chest and enjoyed a heartwarming moment with the five-time Pro Bowl selection.

Here’s our latest 2024 NFL mock draft after the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is over. The 2024 NFL Draft is officially on the clock.
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in overtime to clinch their third championship in five years. Patrick Mahomes reminded the rest of the NFL that he sets the standard every other team is chasing. As we turn our attention to the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears’ decision at quarterback will define the top of the order.
The Bears own the No.
With the Super Bowl in the books, all eyes shift to the offseason and franchise-defining moment that awaits the Bears. Insider Josh Schrock delivers his latest mock draft after a week in Vegas gathering intel from those around the league.
The Chiefs came back from a horrid first half against the 49ers to claim their third Super Bowl title in five years.
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were one of the biggest storylines of the the NFL season, and they capped it off in dramatic fashion, with the Kansas City Chiefs winning Super Bowl LVIII in an overtime thriller in Las Vegas.
Kelce had nine catches for 93 yards in the win over the San Francisco 49ers and now has three Super Bowl titles on his Hall of Fame resume.
LAS VEGAS – The NFL has a new dynasty to contend with. And it comes with all the trappings we’re familiar with that are part of such reigns. So, yes, the Kansas City Chiefs have it all right now.
They just defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22 in overtime, to claim the Super Bowl LVII crown.
It’s their second consecutive championship. And it’s their third championship in five years.
These Chiefs are so familiar with Super Bowl success now that some of their players have a “Super Bowl routine,” as quarterback Patrick Mahomes mentioned recently.
The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years Sunday night, beating the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in an overtime thriller in Las Vegas.
Patrick Mahomes won it for the Chiefs with a three-yard TD pass to Mecole Hardman. The wide receiver admitted after the game that he blacked out after catching the game-winning TD. Mahomes added another fun aspect to the moment when he said that Mercole didn’t know he had just won the Super Bowl with the catch.
Patrick Mahomes took the floor in the Kansas City Chiefs team meeting Saturday night, for once, at a total loss for words.
“I mean, how do I follow that?” he said to the room.
He wasn’t the only one there left speechless.
The longest-tenured Chief, Kelce’s year has been a lot more than just the fact that he’s dating one of the world’s most famous people. He’s been hurt. He’s shown age. His numbers were down, and, at 34, real questions about how much longer he’d player were asked. And yet, in the playoffs, when it mattered most, he was able to harness what he needed.
The most talked about moment of what was an underwhelming first half of Super Bowl LVIII involved Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce, and it wasn’t something that happened on the field, but instead a tantrum on the sideline.
The Chiefs’ offense got off to a slow start on Sunday night and things officially hit a fever pitch in the second quarter when running back Isiah Pachecho lost a fumble with Kansas City already trailing the San Francisco 49ers 3-0.

Three Super Bowl collapses by 10+ points. Can this man actually win when it matters?
Kyle Shanahan is a (regular season) genius. Kyle Shanahan is revolutionizing the (regular season) NFL. Kyle Shanahan is a (regular season) winner. After the 49ers loss in Super Bowl LVIII it’s fair to add those parentheticals to his resume.
Sunday marked the sixth time in Shanahan’s career that he’s lost a postseason game as a coordinator or head coach — and most notably his third Super Bowl.

Pierre Gasly was watching some of Alpine F1’s owners come through in Super Bowl LVIII
The 2023 Formula 1 season was one of upheaval at Alpine. In addition to personnel changes, the team took on some new owners during the year.
Two of whom just won Super Bowl LVIII.
In June of 2023 Alpine announced that a group of investors have purchased a 24% equity stake in the team. Those investors included Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners, and Maximum Effort Investments.
Welcome, friends, to the 2024 NFL offseason. The Kansas City Chiefs are your repeat NFL champions after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in Super Bowl LVIII. What is there even to discuss when a pending Tom Brady retirement or unretirement is off the table? That’s what we’re here to find out. Last year, we issued one prediction for the coming season for each of the 32 teams. Full transparency: Five of those 32 predictions were correct. So, we’re hitting at about the average rate of a mock draft.
This year? Onward and upward.
Travis Kelce’s fury could have created a problem for the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Instead, Andy Reid deftly turned his star’s heat into a problem for the 49ers.
Patrick Mahomes took a deeply flawed Chiefs team and won his third championship, directing an overtime touchdown drive for the ages.
Chiefs’ Andy Reid is rising up the GOAT list of NFL head coaches, and he’ll be back for more in 2024
Andy Reid is now one of just four head coaches to win three Super Bowl rings. And if the soon-to-be 66-year-old presses on, his ascent among the league’s GOAT coaches appears to have plenty of juice left in it.
Andy Reid’s third championship puts him in rarified air — and he’s coming back for more. This latest coaching masterpiece shows just how good he truly is.
For the second time in four years, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan had to find the words to comfort a team that had climbed to within a step of the NFL mountaintop only to come up short. “There’s nothing different to say,” he said. “We’re hurting right now.
The underdog Chiefs’ rally in overtime to pull out a 25-22 win over the 49ers resulted in a blow to sportsbooks.
Despite a sideline confrontation during Sunday’s Super Bowl that both of them brushed off, Kansas City coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce vowed to return for another season, electing to aim for a third straight Super Bowl title rather than retire.
Moments after leading a winning drive, Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP on Sunday, fresh off a performance in which he threw for 333 yards and ran for 66 more, leading the Chiefs to a 25-22 win over the 49ers.
Once again, the San Francisco 49ers came up a couple plays short of taking home a Super Bowl title, losing 25–22 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.
After the loss, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan addressed a few crucial decisions that he made in overtime that ultimately didn’t go San Francisco’s way.
On the first possession of overtime, the 49ers faced a fourth-and-4 from Kansas City’s 9-yard line. They opted to kick a 27-yard field goal, which rookie Jake Moody booted through the uprights.
Losing Super Bowl LVIII was painful enough for the San Francisco 49ers and receiver Jauan Jennings. Yet not only did the Niners lose to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, 25–22, but if they had won, Jennings probably would have been awarded Super Bowl MVP.
Jennings became one of only two players to catch a touchdown pass and throw one in the same Super Bowl game. He caught four passes for 42 yards and threw for 21 yards with a championship at stake.
Afterward, the third-year receiver was asked how much a close loss in the biggest game of the season hurt.
Super Bowl LVIII was a messy classic. But in the end, the Kansas City Chiefs prevailed, winning 25–22 over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime on a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Mecole Hardman.
There was plenty to take away from a game filled with great plays, miscues and a great finish. Let’s break down the top five takeaways from Super Sunday.

5. Kickers are people, too
Butker converted three field goals of 50-plus yards, including a Super Bowl record 57-yarder.
Sunday night ended with champagne for the Kansas City Chiefs after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in Super Bowl LVIII.
It was the second straight championship for the Chiefs and cemented them as a dynasty of the modern football world.
But before the bottles were popped in the winning locker room, there was quite a bit of stress on the field.

At one point early in the game, things appeared to momentarily boil over between tight end Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid on the sidelines.
The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for the third time in the past five years after Sunday’s win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Once the celebrations subside following Wednesday’s championship parade, it’ll be back to business for the franchise as they aim to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.
After the game, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was asked about Andy Reid’s future with the franchise and the possibility of the 65-year-old heading for retirement after the team’s latest championship.
What a wildly entertaining Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowls after Patrick Mahomes connected with Mecole Hardman Jr. for the game-winning touchdown in overtime to defeat the 49ers, 25–22.
With so much to break down from one of the greatest Super Bowls in NFL history, let’s not waste time. Let’s get to a jam packed “Fact or Fiction” column form Allegiant Stadium.
For the second straight year, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions.
The Chiefs took down the San Francisco 49ers in an overtime thriller on Sunday, leaving Las Vegas with a 25–22 victory and the third Super Bowl ring of the Patrick Mahomes era.
Celebrating on the stage after the win, tight end Travis Kelce belted out a bit of impromptu karaoke, singing “Viva Las Vegas” into the microphone held by CBS’s Jim Nantz.
Patrick Mahomes is right: he’s just getting started.
The greatness of Patrick Mahomes carried the Kansas City Chiefs all year long. The Chiefs never really looked like a Super Bowl team during the regular season, but Mahomes took over in the playoffs and delivered KC another championship.
The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, to win Super Bowl LVIII. Mahomes threw the game-winning touchdown to Mecole Hardman in overtime. It’s the third Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs over the last five seasons. Mahomes now has three Super Bowl MVP trophies to his name.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman didn’t start the season with the franchise, but he made his way back to the team via a midseason trade with the New York Jets and ended up catching the Super Bowl LVIII winning touchdown reception in overtime against the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite not being a mainstay in the Chiefs’ offense throughout the year, even after the trade, Hardman stepped up when the spotlight got brightest, hauling in all three of his targets from Patrick Mahomes during Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Surprising as it might seem for a team going for its second consecutive Super Bowl championship, the Kansas City Chiefs were underdogs throughout their 2024 NFL playoff run.
Against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round, the Chiefs were 2.5-point underdogs on the road. In the AFC championship game, the Baltimore Ravens–the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a 13–4 record–were 4.5-point favorites at home over Kansas City. And in Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers were favored by two points.
A Christmas Day loss was a “good wake-up call” for Kansas City en route to their second title in two seasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in five seasons with a 25–22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.
The game-winning play—a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to receiver Mecole Hardman—was named something that would only be found in coach Andy Reid’s playbook.
Corn Dog.
“The call was different, but it’s like the same exact motion as ‘Corn Dog,’” Mahomes said to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson after the win. “And we brought it back at the right time.
