Mendoza’s production and Indiana’s success went through the roof under Curt Cignetti, but just traits-wise, Mendoza has a lot to like. He’s a tall athlete with good size, a loose arm and good overall frame.

The UW athletic board signed off on one-year contract extensions for Gard as men’s basketball coach, women’s basketball coach Robin Pingeton, men’s hockey coach Mike Hastings, women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson, wrestling coach Chris Bono and swimming coach Jack Brown at its April 15 meeting.
The extensions are standard practice for UW across all sports, with the exception of Luke Fickell after the underwhelming 2025 football season.

A former Michigan State hockey standout has received some recognition for his impressive rookie season in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Former Spartans star Isaac Howard was selected to the AHL All-Rookie Team on Wednesday. The AHL All-Rookie Team is voted on by the coaches, players and media representing each of the league’s 32 member cities.
Howard starred for the Bakersfield Condors this season, recording 22 goals and 25 assists across 45 games with the Edmonton Oilers AHL-affiliate.

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Julian Lewis quieted some noise during last weekend’s spring game with a fairly conservative performance that included one highlight touchdown pass to new target Danny Scudero.
Lewis is battling Utah transfer Isaac Wilson for the starting job, but remains the favorite to open up the 2026 season as Colorado’s starter. Earlier this spring, ESPN ranked Lewis as the No. 62 Power Four starting quarterback, just six from the bottom among the 68 teams.
CBS Sports gives Lewis a slightly more favorable ranking, placing him in the top-15 at No.

We’ve all seen coaches call out their teams, but you don’t really ever hear them get as honest as Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness did after his team wrapped up Game 82 on Tuesday night.
About a month ago, the Blue Jackets looked to be on pace for the Stanley Cup playoffs after Bowness took over for former coach Dean Evason in January. However, in their final 10 games of the season, the Jackets were a disastrous 2-7-1, which led to them missing out on the playoffs by just five points.

Hugo Ekitike will miss the 2026 World Cup for France after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during Champions League play on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Julien Laurens.
The Liverpool forward went down with a non-contact injury during the first half of their quarterfinal loss to Barcelona. Minutes after being tended to by medical personnel, Ekitike was stretchered off and replaced by Mohamed Salah.
Ekitike, 23, is scheduled for scans on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury. The estimated recovery period for the injury is 9-12 months.

NFL reporter Dianna Russini resigned from her position at The Athletic on April 14, exactly one week after pictures of her with New England Patriots head coach and Ohio native Mike Vrabel at a posh Arizona resort were published by the New York Post.
“These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable,” Vrabel told the Post, which published the photos, in a statement last week. “This doesn’t deserve any further response.

It appears Saudi Arabia has reached its spending limit on LIV Golf.
The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sole funder of the breakaway golf circuit, announced a new five-year investment strategy on Wednesday with a focus on reprioritizing spending, and spending hundreds of millions more dollars on LIV Golf doesn’t seem to be part of the plan.
The Financial Times has reported that the PIF is “on the verge of cutting its support” for LIV Golf.

France manager Didier Deschamps has confirmed striker Hugo Ekitike will miss the World Cup after suffering a suspected Achilles injury during Liverpool’s Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain on Tuesday.
The France forward left the pitch at Anfield on a stretcher, and Liverpool fear a long absence for the 23-year-old, which could also rule him out of the start of next season.
Ekitike went for scans on Wednesday, which are expected to confirm the extent of the damage.

The preferred bidders for Sheffield Wednesday, Arise Capital Partners, have said they have been told by the EFL that the club will start next season in League One with a 15-point penalty.

The Kentucky Wildcats basketball team continues to cast a wide net in the transfer portal trying to add talent to next year’s roster. A new name on the list is Sebastian Rancik, a forward who was originally scheduled to visit Indiana this week. Now, he’s visiting Lexington instead.
Rancik is a 6’9″, 210 lb power forward who entered the portal from the Colorado Buffaloes, where he spent his first two seasons.
