Spanish star Alexia Putellas is to join WSL side London City Lionesses, Michele Kang’s women-only club, AFP learned Thursday from a source close to the matter. 
Last month, after helping Barcelona to claim a fourth Champions League title, the 32-year-old two-time Ballon d’Or winner announced she would be leaving the Catalans after 14 years.

The Columbus Blue Jackets made a big addition on the eve of the draft by acquiring do-it-all winger Valeri Nichushkin in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
The Blue Jackets sent the 43rd pick this weekend, a third-rounder next year and a fifth-rounder in 2028 to Colorado.
“Valeri is a big, strong forward who skates exceptionally well, can score goals, win puck battles and doesn’t shy away from playing in the hard areas,” Columbus general manager Don Waddell said.

Pope Leo XIV has received a special gift from former Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
The pontiff has been given the baseball from the final out of Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. It was unclear when exactly the exchange occurred, but Pierzynski posted pictures on social media on Thursday showing the moment at the Vatican.
“7 year old me, at my First Communion, would have never thought that I would get to meet The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV,” Pierzynski wrote on Instagram. “I was honored to give him the last out ball from Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, the game he attended.

It should come as no surprise to fans that a salary cap is the biggest issue facing the league and its players in labor negotiations ahead of the current collective-bargaining agreement (CBA) expiring in December. Given the league’s actions in previous negotiations, gaining cost certainty on team expenses and player contracts is a major focus by the owners.

EA Sports has released its official Top 25 rankings of college football teams ahead of the soon to be released “College Football ’27” later this summer. The video game maker has ranked the Texas Longhorns No. 5 to start the season.
The Big Ten dominates the top of the ranking, with the top three teams on the list. Notre Dame is No. 4, just ahead of the Longhorns. The back half of the Top 10 is made up of mostly SEC schools, with Ole Miss, LSU, Georgia and Oklahoma just behind the Longhorns. Miami also made the Top 10.
But the rankings are very close. Oregon leads with 91 points.

USC catcher Isaac Cadena will enter the transfer portal for his senior season following a successful campaign in 2026.
Cadena is the second power-hitting catcher from USC to enter the transfer portal this offseason, as star player Augie Lopez also declared his intent to move colleges earlier in the offseason. USC baseball will also lose pitchers Diego Velasquez and Gavin Lauridsen to the transfer portal, and Mason Edwards is a candidate for the upcoming MLB draft.
