Wimbledon is the only grand slam tennis tournament where there are rules against late-night finishes due to the tournament’s strict 11pm curfew.
Andy Murray’s 4am finish against Thanasi Kokkinakis at the 2023 Australian Open remains the latest grand slam match on record, while singles matches concluding well after midnight is not uncommon at the French Open and US Open, either.
The All England Club operates on a different set of rules, however, and has done so since the construction of Centre Court roof in 2009.

Manuel Ugarte was carried off on a stretcher as his Uruguay team were knocked out of the World Cup on Friday, with the injured midfielder leaving the field in tears.
Ugarte, who represents Manchester United at club level, collided with teammate Mathias Olivera while the pair chased Spain’s Pedri, and he appeared to catch his studs in the turf and injure his knee.
The 25-year-old was treated on the field but was unable to continue, and to add insult to injury, Spain scored through Alex Baena while he was down – on the cusp of half-time, helped by an error from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Liverpool to accelerate talks for forward after the World Cup – Opinion
Liverpool’s Patience Over Diomande Could Be the Smartest Decision of the Summer
Liverpool’s pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Diomande appears to have gone unusually quiet over recent days, but that should not be interpreted as a lack of intent.
In fact, the silence may tell us exactly how Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes intend to conduct business.
Which version of Aryna Sabalenka will walk through the hallowed gates of the All England Club next week? The imperious world No 1 and four-time major champion, or the four-time runner-up, who – for all her dominance at the top of the sport – has won just one of the last six grand slams?
At the halfway point of this season, Sabalenka is the WTA Tour’s greatest enigma. She has been world No 1 for 96 weeks, finishing the last two years as the top-ranked player.
A year on from a final to forget, Amanda Anisimova returns to the All England Club. The 24-year-old could be forgiven for having mixed feelings about walking back through the gates at Wimbledon, having experienced the highest highs and the lowest low imaginable on its hallowed turf.
Her march through the draw at last year’s tournament, to her first major final, was hugely impressive. The final itself, a 6-0 6-0 drubbing by Iga Swiatek, the first of that scoreline at Wimbledon in over a century, was neatly summed up by her then coach as “the worst off day we have ever experienced”.

Liverpool Coaching Staff: Andoni Iraola Set for Key Anfield Reinforcements
Iraola’s Liverpool Vision Starts Behind the Scenes
Liverpool’s appointment of Andoni Iraola was always going to be about more than one man walking through the door at Anfield. Managers arrive with ideas, principles, habits and, often, people. According to information credited to Sky Sports, that process is now gathering pace, with Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper set to follow Iraola from Bournemouth to Liverpool.

Uruguay’s World Cup ended in acrimony and “disgrace” as Marcelo Bielsa took full responsibility for their underwhelming group-stage exit after a 1-0 defeat to Spain.
“What do I leave for Uruguayan football? Nothing,” Bielsa, the Argentinian coach who previously managed Leeds, said. “Because any contribution that a coach might make to football in a country after three years of work never truly takes hold if results aren’t achieved. Fourth place in the qualifiers didn’t count for much, and a third-place finish in the Copa America didn’t, either.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 26: Shoja Khalilzadeh #4 of IR Iran scores his team’s second goal that was ruled offside following a VAR review during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G match between Egypt and IR Iran at Seattle Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Seattle, Washington. For a brief moment, it looked as if Iran had snatched a dramatic stoppage time winner against Egypt to secure their first ever berth in the FIFA World Cup knockout round.
NEW DELHI: Shreyas Iyer marked his return to India’s T20I side in historic fashion on Friday, taking charge of the team on his captaincy debut in the format after the longest absence from T20Is before leading a side internationally.
When Iyer walked out for the toss in the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast, he had missed 63 consecutive T20 internationals for India since his previous appearance against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023. The remarkable gap is the longest by any player before captaining their national side in T20Is for the first time.
For an Iran squad whose simple presence at these World Cup Finals was a precariously run thing for so many months, the continuation of their unprecedented journey in North America is hanging, like so many others, by an excruciating 24-hour thread. But only after the most enthralling – and agonising – seven minutes of stoppage time you will ever see.
For West Ham in May, see Iran in June: glorious goalscoring moments at the death taken away in the cruellest of ways.
The 2026 World Cup group stage concludes on Saturday with Groups J, K and L in action.
This is the last day before the knockout round begins and there is plenty still left to be the decided. The Round of 32 bracket is almost filled and with three groups remaining, we will get answers and matchups by the end of the day.
Here’s what you need to know for Day 17 of the World Cup.
Panama vs. England
Saturday, June 27 | 5 p.m. ET | East Rutherford, N.J.
SEATTLE — It was the World Cup game everyone had been eyeing for months, some with defiance, some with trepidation, some with fury.
As is so often the case, however, the fears of the unknown are worse than the reality. A game that was supposed to represent the worst of what the World Cup has become instead was a showcase of why it’s so magnificent.
Egypt and Iran did not walk off the field at the sight of Pride flags in the stands. There were Egypt fans wearing Pharaoh headdresses and Iran fans waving flags past and present.

Sooryavanshi, who recently earned his maiden India call-up, was widely tipped to make his international debut in Belfast. However, India opted to retain the experienced opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, meaning the 15-year-old had to wait for his opportunity.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Not every title is won in a shootout of goals. Sometimes one penalty, one finish and a defensive display are all it takes.
