Winning the World Series is widely viewed as the only successful outcome for Major League Baseball teams in a given season. But should it be?
It’s a question that’s even more relevant as the 2024 MLB season officially starts early Wednesday morning with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres playing in South Korea. Ahead of the first game of the year, The Athletic spoke to several key members of the Dodgers organization about the expectations after signing Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and acquiring Tyler Glasnow.

One of the best players in men’s college basketball is out for the NCAA tournament.
Kansas Jayhawks wing Kevin McCullar Jr., one of two high-major players in the country who averaged better than 18 points, six rebounds and four assists per game this season, is out for the Big Dance, coach Bill Self announced Tuesday evening. McCullar had been nursing a nagging knee injury that caused him to miss the Jayhawks’ Big 12 conference tournament loss against the Cincinnati Bearcats and has had him in and out of the lineup since late January.
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” has been said for a long, long time and the College of Charleston Cougars are putting it into practice for the NCAA Tournament.
The Cougars are the No.13 seed in the tournament’s West region and will face the No. 4 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday in Spokane, Washington.
That’s a long way from both Charleston and Tuscaloosa, but of course, the College of Charleston has just under 10,000 students while Alabama has that several times over.
After St. John’s missed out on the NCAA tournament, coach Rick Pitino didn’t hesitate to voice his displeasure with the selection committee and the weight it places on analytics.
Pitino questioned what more the Red Storm could’ve done to get in the tournament given their difficult strength of schedule, and also expressed dismay that Seton Hall, who won 13 games in the Big East, was not included among the field of 68.
On Tuesday, Pitino offered a suggestion that he believes would help enhance the quality of the selection committee.

The real March Madness is scrambling to find truTV
Every March the cries ring out across the land.
“Where can I find truTV?”
With the return of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, comes the return of those cries. Once again, the network that began as Court TV back in the 1990s to show live coverage of legal proceedings will turn its focus to a different kind of court.
TruTV will be airing games starting with the First Four in Dayton through the first two rounds of the tournament. After that, games will primarily be shown on CBS and TBS.
The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team will have to operate without star guard Kevin McCullar Jr. in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Jayhawks coach Bill Self told reporters Tuesday that McCullars will miss the entire tournament due to a knee injury.
“He’s out,” Self said, via The Kansas City Star. “We’re shutting him down for the tournament. If we are fortunate enough to win two games, we’d have done it without him. You know, he hasn’t practiced in six weeks, basically. He hasn’t done more damage to his knee.
“He tried to [play] and said he just couldn’t go.
It’s a wild time in the sports media rights landscape, with individual sports leagues looking to increase revenues, and media companies dealing with declining ones.
And a sports league surprisingly believes it has a hot property that deserves more money: the WNBA.
The WNBA and NBA are attempting to put together a joint continuation of their current deal with ABC and ESPN, according to Front Office Sports. The WNBA though, believes it currently has a stronger hand and an undervalued media package.
The return home to Iowa lasted about two months for offensive lineman Kaydn Proctor, who will now reportedly transfer back to Alabama, after recently transferring to the Hawkeyes.
News of Proctor coming back home to Iowa was met with jubilation from the Hawkeyes fan base, after the highly-touted lineman signed with Alabama out of high school. Playing in all thirteen games for Nick Saban last season, the talented offensive lineman created a massive buzz for the Hawkeyes when he decided to transfer from Alabama after Saban retired.
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France are coming our way in just a few months, but don’t expect to see any Russian or Belarusian athletes in the opening ceremony.
Although, considering how dull the opening ceremony seems like it’ll be, this doesn’t appear to be the kind of punishment the IOC thinks it is.
One New York Jets fan went to bizarre lengths in order to help the team secure the signing of free agent wide receiver Mike Williams.
Social media user “@NYJ_Matt” served up a classic taste of New Jersey to the visiting wide receiver, ordering him a Taylor Ham, egg and cheese sandwich directly to the Jets’ facility at One Jets Drive, having the meal delivered via DoorDash.
On Tuesday, Williams agreed to a one-year deal with the Jets worth up to $15 million, prompting the team to acknowledge the sandwich delivery via social media.
Philadelphia 76ers guard Kyle Lowry spent the last three seasons with the Miami Heat. Playing against his old team Monday night, Lowry was happy to see old teammates but couldn’t hold back the shenanigans that the 37-year-old is known for.
Lowry got away with a sneaky middle finger directed at former teammate Bam Adebayo en route to a 98-91 win by the Sixers.
The guard made the veteran move of hiding the bird underneath his jersey in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment on national television.
The forrmer five-star recruit and freshman starter appears to be returning to Alabama.

Pure joy. The peal of wedding bells. The spring sonata of a songbird. And this. Elementary schoolchildren at play.
Shohei Ohtani is listening to and watching them smile and shriek in the delight that only the innocence and wonder of youth allow. The world will teach them anxiety, duplicity and cynicism. Not now. Not here. This is the music of joy.
“It had a special feeling to it!” gushes one boy in Japanese. “It had a signature on it! I was happy to touch it!”
Ohtani is watching a three-minute video on a phone.
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards might have thrown down the best dunk of the 2023–24 NBA season on Monday night.
Midway through the third quarter of the Wolves’ 114–103 win over the Utah Jazz at Delta Center, Edwards caught a pass from teammate Nickeil Alexander-Walker just inside the three-point line. Without hesitation, Edwards leapt into midair and threw down a thunderous dunk over Jazz forward John Collins.
It was incredible.
“Ain’t no way, bruh,” veteran guard Mike Conley said when watching a replay of the dunk in the Timberwolves’ locker room.
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal will enter the 2024 season on one of the hottest seats in the country, and he’ll have to go through it without one of his best and most experienced stars. Running back Henry Parrish Jr. — the team’s leading rusher for each of the last two seasons — will enter the transfer portal once it opens on April 15.
“Henry will not be with the program anymore,” Cristobal said (via the Miami Herald). “He’ll go in the portal. It’s best for him and best for the University of Miami to move on.
Cincinnati Bengals teammates kicker Evan McPherson and linebacker Logan Wilson became girl dads on the same day: last Friday, March 15.
To make the moment even more special, their daughters were born in the same hospital. What are the chances of that?
McPherson and his wife Gracie alongside Wilson and his wife Morgan took a picture in the hospital holding their new daughters, the “birthday twins” as they called them. The McPhersons named their daughter Merritt Hayes, while the Wilsons named their daughter Kambry James.
Fresh off a second consecutive Super Bowl victory, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid will be taking his talents to the baseball diamond in late March.

The Royals’ 2024 season officially begins March 28, and Reid will get the festivities going at Kauffman Stadium by throwing out the first pitch.

UNC women’s tennis player Reese Brantmeier joined a lawsuit on Monday, knocking the Association as hypocritical for allowing athletes to earn ‘pay-for-play’ funds within the bounds of NIL (name, image, likeness) but no other way.
Brantmeier’s qualms against the NCAA’s current NIL model highlight that star college basketball or football players as primary benefactors of name, image and likeness deals.

There was an outpouring of tributes from around the NHL.
Clemson has long been content to sit just outside the ring and watch Florida State very publicly and very loudly fight the same fight it was also ready to wage. It doesn’t mean the schools had dissimilar goals, but it does mean they had dissimilar tacts.
You couldn’t watch a Clemson board of trustees meeting on YouTube like you could FSU’s to see Seminoles administrators both inside and outside of athletics talk openly about the need to leave the ACC over a year ago. But after watching and waiting, the Tigers have finally joined the Noles in suing the ACC on a parallel legal track.

Caitlin Clark took her stardom to another level this season, breaking several NCAA records to cement her place in history.
Just this year, the Iowa star became the NCAA Division I women’s basketball career scoring leader, then broke the all-time scoring record in major women’s college basketball history, and finally passed Pete Maravich for leading scorer in major college basketball history.
Therefore, Clark is no stranger to breaking records as she enters her final NCAA tournament this year.
The New York Jets are adding another key weapon for Aaron Rodgers to throw to in 2024.
The Jets and veteran wide receiver Mike Williams have agreed to terms on a one-year contract, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The contract with New York will be worth up to $15 million.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will be doing away with one of the rule changes introduced during the previous Summer Games in Tokyo back in ’21.
The Tokyo Games introduced an intimacy ban in light of the breakout of the COVID-19 virus, preventing athletes from getting into close contact, including hugs and handshakes, and were even asked to avoid singing and chanting.
Those guidelines will not be in place during the event in Paris, and the Olympic village will be supplied with a staggering 300,000 condoms for the Games, according to Sky News.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis left Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors with a corneal abrasion. And although any eye injury is an obvious concern, Davis’s ailment sounds nothing short of miserable.
Davis suited up roughly 48 hours later and put together a solid game in a win over the Atlanta Hawks. But his detailed description of precisely how the eye injury is affecting him reveals it’s a impressive he played at all Monday night.
“I just couldn’t see,” Davis told reporters after Monday’s game. “It’s right in the middle of my eye.
ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro supported Pat McAfee on stage during the Axios What’s Next Summit Tuesday in Washington D.C. He credited McAfee for his “authenticity” and “moving the needle” in an uber-competitive media environment.
Hear from Pitaro below:
McAfee has embroiled himself in controversy at ESPN for much of the past four months.
The oft-cited Aaron Rodgers-Jimmy Kimmel spat originated via his program. He called ESPN exec Norby Williamson a “rat” on ESPN in January. McAfee recently engaged in a heated phone call with Stephen A.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s first tweet of 2024 might have something to do with a potential trade destination.
NFL fan sleuths are frantically trying to decipher the meaning of Aiyuk’s cryptic tweet on Tuesday in which he tagged Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin in response to a viral joke.
After photos comparing Aiyuk’s and Tomlin’s physical similarities made the rounds on the internet, the 49ers wideout himself gave his thoughts on the matter.
Aiyuk tweeted, “@CoachTomlin they saying we twins. What you think?”

Charles McDonald is joined by Nate Tice to give their thoughts on the latest free agency moves and dive into how free agency has affected the 2024 NFL Draft so far before answering questions from listeners. The duo start with their thoughts on Justin Fields’ fit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Charles thinks Russell Wilson accidentally played himself, and they both are concerned about the two quarterbacks fitting into Arthur Smith’s offense, which favors a lot of over-the-middle passing.
Early in ESPN’s broadcast of the New York Knicks–Golden State Warriors game Monday night a debate broke out over Jalen Brunson’s place among the NBA’s elite. Using a quote from Kings coach Mike Brown, who after Brunson torched Sacramento for 42 points on 61% shooting Saturday noted that the Sacramento Kings blitzed Brunson more than any player other than Stephen Curry, the question was asked: Is Brunson on Curry’s level?
The answer, frankly, doesn’t matter. That there’s even a comparison is praise enough.
Between Selection Sunday and Thursday afternoon, when the Round of 64 officially tips off, fanatics and casual fans alike will be inundated with dozens of March Madness stats they need to know to help fill out a “perfect” bracket. The odds of doing so are, well, astronomical, but there are plenty of trends to follow for those who are chasing perfection.

Jon Rahm began his Masters advance press conference laser-focused on his tie, looking in the camera on his computer while constantly fixing it and even apologizing for the fact it wasn’t tied very well. Saying that he rushed it was an understatement.
The gold tie was on a white shirt with his green jacket, so Rahm looked the part of a Masters champion. But he was also a bit nervous, particularly when talking about his Champions Dinner menu at the beginning of the call with national media.
Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Greg Wissinger from The Kings Herald to discuss the Sacramento Kings, who could be finding a new identity in the middle of a playoff race.
