Rarely does the home team crowd want the visiting team to win.
But rarely does a team trade a generational star – a revered star at that – entering his prime, infuriating a fanbase and invoking vitriol toward ownership and the front office led by general manager Nico Harrison.
Luka Doncic made an emotional return to Dallas Wednesday for the first time since the Mavericks moved him to the Lakers just days before NBA trade deadline in early February.
It was one of the most surprising and controversial trades in league history.
Wednesday’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center may have been the most anticipated game in the NBA this season. It marked the return of Luka Doncic to the arena and the area he called home for six-plus seasons, and it was also Anthony Davis’ first game versus the Lakers since he was essentially swapped for Doncic in that massive February trade.
It was an emotional night for Doncic, who was consistently showered with love and cheered by the Mavs fans in attendance.

CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Giddey dominated with 28 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists and the Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 119-111 Wednesday night in a game with heavy seeding implications.
Giddey extended a career high with his seventh triple-double as the ninth-place Bulls (37-43) moved a game ahead of Miami in the Eastern Conference. They also pulled within a half-game of Atlanta for the eighth seed. The ninth-place team gets a home game against the 10th seed in the play-in tournament. The winner then visits the loser of the game between the seventh and eighth seeds.
The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a slow start in their nonconference Bedlam matchup with Oklahoma State, but once they got going, the Sooners couldn’t be stopped.
OU didn’t get on the board until a two-run home run from Kasidi Pickering in the third inning cut the Cowgirls lead to one.
Sam Landry allowed two runs in the opening frame and one in the third. She faced a ton of adversity in the fourth inning after loading the bases on a pair of infield singles and a walk.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Matthew Knies scored a game-winning goal in overtime to record his second hat trick of the season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Toronto opened up a three-point lead on Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division with four games left for each team.
Knies finished off his hat trick with 1:04 left in the overtime.
Mitch Marner had a goal and three points and Auston Matthews had three assists. Anthony Stolarz finished with 25 saves.
